I'd still be flying if I could see well enough to pass a flight physical. Flying was my life and now I am an eagle with his wings clipped.

That's a bummer, BR, but at least you have the memories.

DH flew a helicopter in vietnam---he loved it---the flying part that is.
I was Army Aviation too, Jan. Most of my time in the service was in a unit that repaired Huey's Cobra's and Loh's. They were used to train new U.S. and then later ARVN pilots.

If you don't know what all that meant, ask RW, he knows.

Ok Jan, this may need a bit of explaining. After WWII the Air Force broke away from the Army and became a separate branch of the military. The Army didn't have an air wing then, so they formed the Army Aviation wing of the Army.

The 101st jumped out of airplanes in WWII, but by Vietnam, they had become a mobile unit that moved around via helicopter. It makes perfect sense. RW probably flew a Huey (UH-1), which was primarily used for troop transport and evacuation of the wounded.

Really ?? What does it say on his DD-214 ??

Now you're getting into the I don't know. Ask me when he is up, and I'll ask him. :)

All I know is that they've been a pain in the .... about it---which includes the period they kept telling us his records were lost in a fire!!!
We did finally get part of them, but not all. Of course it's the part where a helicopter blade fell on him that was missing. :grr:

Jan, ask him if he wore this patch and crest and the Transportation Corps insignia, when he was stateside. If so, then he was Army Aviation. Overseas, he probably was assigned to the 101 but officially he was Tranportation Corps, or Army Aviation.
