The radio was the only thing I could listen to in the 1930's & 1940's. It was a lot better when we moved to town and had electricity. Before then, grownups didn't let us kids run the batteries down. They always made sure that the batteries were fresh so they could listen to the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday night.
I grew up listening to the Opry !!! Than watching it on tv !

Well I use to play with a guy who's parents were regulars on the Opry,
They were Mom and Pop Betts.

I was too poor to watch the original Mickey Mouse Show, so I had to go out to the garbage cans and watch the Ricky Rat Show. Bah bum !!!! 
I have a good number of Radios from the early to mid 20's. A few are restored, but most are built from scratch from plans using original parts. Either that or some of my designs. Back then there was more home built radios than manufactured ones. A friend of mine took some photos of part of them a while back. I don't know if you can see them from this URL, but maybe so.

Our party line in Pine Ridge, Texas was 3 long rings. No number. We had to crank them. A real loooooooong ring would get Central.
