Usually there's a special port on the back marked INTERNET or WAN that goes to the cable modem (like shoe is saying). Then there are 3/4./5 or so ports for computers and other stuffis to plug into (your computer goes there). Reboot your PC if it won't connect. Also check that windows is set for DHCP so it's on the same network as the router (google DHCP settings before you begin alll this junk and confirm).
You should be able to type the routers address into your web browser (192.168.1.1 maybe) and get screen that you can type the password into. You may need to make sure your antivirus/firewall isn't blocking it.
