I measured my most recent metal ring. The dimensions get printed ~.5 mm too tight. So the ring CAD would need an offset of .25 mm from the surfaces of the oval that are adjacent to the body and top cap to factor in their print tolerance.

I'm guessing the tightness might come from shrinkage of the metal after casting and cooling. I wonder if they themselves do any compensatory scaling up of the CAD before printing the lost-wax blank?

... tanks are mechanically over-complicated, with lots of potential points of failure to seal, and even when they're working perfectly, they're sensitive to changes .....

No kidding....have you seen the exploded view of the new kayfun V4? Yikes. A gazillion parts just to vape. Really? Good grief. Granted the Kayfun's are all very good, but all those parts plus that price tag - no thanks....ever since I discovered BF devices, there was no looking back.

Cheers.

Old paint stripped and trying 24K paint again but this time with a clear poly ... will see how this combination works since Krylon Matte was seemingly not compatible.

I've been trying to find a decent 24k gold paint...what brand are you using? Is that from a rattle can or a sprayer?

The paint was 24K metallic (dmcolor) in a rattle can that I picked up at Michael's. It's a really a bright metallic gold but when I used Krylon Matte as a top coat it dulled way down to something more like a linen. So far with the poly coat I put on this round, the gold color is still metallic even though it only got a single coat paint. Coat 1 soaks into the white plastic and dries slightly dull. A second coat dries considerably brighter and if you do a 3rd it's quite 24K looking.

Though for a mod... wear is important and the last topcoat combination started looking bad really fast! Interesting to me is that I'm still using the gold button (was a modified alps) from the first paint combination and it's actually turned a green'ish color sort of like a patina.

see? that's the problem with you squonkers ;) you need to expand your horizons

Poor Tibs, still after that SxS...lol. Remember, maybe in 2015. Until then, just grab you an Ignition adapter (though it is a mech). FYI, Fasttech now sells a knockoff of it.

https://www.fasttech.com/products/0/10010802/1923600-ignition-base-for-510-atomizer-and-mod

And the 4Nine 1to1 clone works perfect with this (it is the shortest mech I am aware of).

This is what it will look like (this is a real ignition with the 4nine clone).

All the above on timing, effort, etc...just a weekend hobby thing. Thanks, but pdib has so much better precision and his finish is awesome. He uses a CA finish and really makes the wood sing. This is natural wood and wax finish.

That's OK George, leme take that 'unfinished' one off your hands ;) (looks fantastic to me)
