Any pointers to a how-to on CA ?
I can see me getting it horribly wrong and the 911 call of me glued to the ceiling and the refrigerator being played on late night TV.

Sorry, but not really. I have only done a few small parts so far and I am still experimenting. Will experiment some more on some scrap parts and report back when I do.

Acetone/CA at a 2:1 ratio is where I am starting, and lots of nitrile gloves......

Appreciate your taking the time to help us.

That's what I did with my bungled experiment
Not sure if it was too humid, the brush did that, or what exactly caused all the whitening of the CA...

I used the disposable air brush that Mike posted above. The cerakote is fairly easy to apply. I just mixed it up according to the directions and then sprayed two coats. The second coat was done about 5 minutes after the first coat. The material absorbed a bit, but for the most part it stayed on the surface. Then I baked it at 150F for two hours. Thats it. The only issue with Ceracote is that its expensive. $35 for just a sample size and shipping is another $12 or so. The sample looks like it can do at least 5 or 6 mods ( I only had a small amount to barely get two done.) Mike would probably have a better estimate for this. So it could be a good alternative to shapeway's colored plastic. Not as easy as a coat of poly or acrylic, but benefits are definitely there.

I suspect that the one of the chemicals dissolved the dye in your case, and if that be the case I would bet on the acetone as I have applied straight CA to dyed parts before and they didnt run.

To test the theory, here is what happened to a dyed part after only a few seconds in straight acetone.

In any event, I wouldnt do the CA treatment on dyed parts, and I would test the acetone on any painted parts as well before attempting it. It does make a great treatment for bare parts though, and I am betting the alumide will come out nice, especially after a good buff.

Hey Jake, I almost believed Squonk Bottom Flats was a real place. Google Maps proves that no, you don't really live there. :)

Ahhhh... but you haven't seen my growing collection of BF mods.... and the rest collection dust :D

Edit
It wouldn't surprise me though if there was a place in NC called SBF.
We do have: Red Cross, Frog Pond, Big Lick, and Climax

Good ol' Krylon...thanks!

I love this stuff. I applied around 6 coats to my purple mod, and it still retained most of the grainy look and feel the original plastic had. It looks the same as the day I finished the mod. I just ordered two more cans of the stuff.
