I find my self not using the onboard usb charger on my mods. I prefer to switch out the batteries and use my I4 for charging :)
How are everyones Shapeways order's going? My first order was to ship Sept 19 still no ship :( I made a second order yesterday and Oct 14 is ETD
That means it will not be in Canada till the end of Oct :( Is it just me or does this seam like it is taking a little to long?

You could cut into the plastic to make a hole for a charger. The challenge will be that the body is round and the face of the charger is flat. So either you are going to have a slight gap in the shell or have the edges of the charger stick out. I could try to design in a charger port above the tact switches, but I am not sure how many people really wanted it. You can do a battery swap in the time it takes to plug both ends of the charger in...It will also be quite a bit of design work, and I have no idea if after you include the required wall thickness that there will be enough space to do all the solders.

Yup, that ring and top cap are wrong....

Ok...Mr Reliant here is the drill.

You need to email shapeways at service@shapeways.com. Put the following in your email.

In the Subject line: "Question on Potential Part misprint/replacement"

In the email text:

Hi Shapeways Service.

I am contacting you concerning order number [xxxxx]. In that order was a part called [Type name of Part] printed in [Material Type]. I believe the part was printed [too small] and not within the stated accuracy for the material. I have included pictures of the key dimensions measured with a digital caliper [or ruler].

Please let me know how we should proceed for correction.

Thanks for your consideration.

[Your Name]

If you have multiple parts that are Fubar, use the same structure for each part. Provide multiple pictures of the dimensions for each part not acceptable to you. They respond within 24hrs.

Typically, this get you quickly past the guy doing the email screening and to a resolution team. They will look at your pictures, then compare to the file they have for the part. Then they should send you an email that they are going to reprint to the part.

Hope that helps!

Edit: and BTW hold on to those "wrong" parts for a future mod....;)

I posted this over at the co-op thread, but I also wanted to post it up here as well. I did hear back from a couple of people. Their parts also printed slightly too thick (but within shapeway guaranteed tolerances) While the print drift is slight, it can present a head scratching moment. It did for me. I am updating the main body part so that it will lower the thickness range at the face where the tact switches are located. It should address the print issue. If anyone has a mod that the tact switches do not extend out as far as they like, you can sand down the base of the internal structure ~.5mm and that should give you additional clearance to be able to more easily access them. The body part will be updated in the AM .

ok....bad timing on this post, but I want to get a potential issue out here for everyone. I temporarily took down the the Body part piece of the v3.1. Apparently, on assembly some people are not getting adequate clearances for the Tact switch buttons in the base. I checked the CAD file and the design dimensions provides about 1 mm of clearance, which is perfect for tact switch actuation. So I checked my recently assembled v3.1 and my tact switches while are operable they do look a little to flush. I have a thick coat of CeraKote paint on it, so that may be adding a little bit. But they do look a bit more flush than they should be.

I measured the actual body part and the internal structure dimensions on my recent build. They are both on the outside boundry (bigger) of what shapeways says is their tolerances for specs, adding a total of .6 mm. So if there is any variability in your build, meaning that your internal structure is not perfectly flush against the body base or your tact switch is off by a hair or two when you glue it in the internal, you may get a clearance issue.

I am waiting to hear from a couple of people who recently received their parts so they can measure them as well. After I hear back, I will either re-open the part or update the the shapeways file to reduce thicknesses ~.6 to .8 mm or so and eliminate the potential issue.

If you have already ordered parts and on your dry assembly see this issue, potential solutions are: sand down the larger internal structure face that sits flush against the body base, sand down the face of the internal part that the tact switch sits on and/or open up the external tact switch hole by shaving a larger chamfer around the opening to get better button access (in this order) .

Here is a picture of my recent v3.1 build and a clip from the CAD program on the assembled parts for reference to the measurements I took. I did not do any modding to the parts. (I didnt follow my own advice and do a dry assemble...lol) In hindsight, would have sanded down the large face on the bottom of the internal before installing the tact switches. If anyone has an issue with the fitment and needs assistance, feel free to PM me or just post up here or in the other thread.

I hate to ask this but...... Is there another 3D printing company that can be used instead of ShapeWays?

I know there are plenty of other companies out there but any of them that can do this on a person to person order?

I ordered my parts from ShapeWays with a lot of problems, and still haven't done anything about them as of yet. They are reprinting only the ring as it was shrunken also but since I guess Gdeal took the body off they cannot look up my body order and reprint that.

I don't mind paying again for another body but it looks like Id rather order it from another company that can make these parts without all these mistakes. I thought ShapeWays were top players and it looks like my first impressions are riddled with regret.

I'm going to start looking for another printer and see if they can print these parts.

We can try imaterialize for the body parts. They are much more expensive on smaller parts (could be up to 5x more expensive) and dont do product grouping (for example, the internal assembly model on shapeways would need to be ordered as six/seven parts individually). I dont have a lot of experience with them, so others can provide better insight to a comparison on printed parts.

If you want to order from them let me know, which parts you want to get, I will need to set up the files.

On your shapeways ring issue did you send them a picture of the ring showing the key dimensions being measured that you see/believe as being incorrect? I have had no issue with them replacing parts that dont meet their guaranteed specification. They just need the measurements so they can check off their internal process boxes to move it forward.

I posted a template yesterday that you can use for each part that you are not satisfied with. The key to getting shapeways to respond quickly is give them information in a way that makes it easy for them to work it through their system.

Also, I didnt remove the body part file from shapeways, its still on their site and they can access it. I just closed off the ability to order it. What was their response to you on the body part that was printed/dyed incorrectly?

Gotta love that no dry hit thing, it is what actually made me "like" a dripper!
