Just read through the install guide, all I have to say is WOW! Thank you so much for providing that, I know it can get time consuming to document everything so thoroughly.

I'll be soldering the internals tonight, going off of the new guide. I will report back with any feedback.

Quick question for Mundy/Rossum: What happens if you put your battery in + up? Do the dna electronics catch this, or will it go into nuclear meltdown? Also, why did you guys put a fuse in? I thought the dna had shortcircuit protection.

Short Circuit protection...yes
Reverse battery protection...no.

It's highly inadvisable to do that. Chances are good your DNA will smell burnt and never be quite the same afterward. Don't ask me how I know this.

Get in the habit of explicitly asking yourself: "Is this battery in correctly?" before putting the "upper" on. An upside-down battery cannot hurt anything until you put the upper on, which completes the circuit.

Also, why did you guys put a fuse in? I thought the DNA had shortcircuit protection.
Belt and suspenders. The DNA has short circuit protection on its output, but it can't prevent your battery from going into thermal runaway if something inside your mod shorts the battery.

Below is a link to the "Build Doc" for the v3.1. Its a bit longer than I wanted it to be, but better to have more info than less. This is one way to put the device together, there are a number of other ways as well. I noted a few of them. Thanks to the BETA guys (Tim, Mundy, 4Nic8, Val Heli, Kataphractus and Rossum and BobC) for the input and help.

Precise, concise, detail is immaculate, best I've seen. Mucho Kudos to gdeal and all!

I'm going through 18 ml on my reo a day. Am I a freak?

Nope. I did over 12 ml of 18 mg yesterday.
Was 5 PAD of strong Danish RYO for 5 years, and 5 PAD of Camel Lights or DuMaurier for the previous 15.
Throw in a few pipes every evening... yeah I can crank on nic - strong like bull.

I try to keep it down to 6-ish-ml though 'cause I'm cheap.

I've only quit for 9 months and there are days now that I forget to vape.

Happened to me from 1000 - 1630 today until I got back in the car.
There is nowhere near the urgency for me to vape like there was to smoke.

I wondered the same thing so I chanced it and put it in backwards on purpose for about 15 seconds then put in correctly and it worked. I did it again when I made this video. Rossum later reported that he inadvertently did it and fried his. One notable difference was that I had an atty with coil installed and he didn't. I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but I have not chanced it since then for obvious reasons. I put the battery in positive down with OliveR so it is second nature to do it correct for the way I wired this one.

Disclaimer: I apparently got lucky, don't try this.

Which is why I said "Chances are good" rather than making a definitive statement. ;)

No, that's not correct. I did have any atty installed; it had a ~1.0 ohm coil on it. It started sizzling pretty much immediately, which tipped me off that there was something wrong.

I second that. :D

BTW, when I put the battery in the right way afterward, it also powered up. But upon trying to fire it, the display read "Too Hot". So I let it cool for a while. It then worked normally for a little while, before failing for real. The real failure mode: It wouldn't fire at above ~3.1 V no matter what the power was set to.

Unfortunately, I have to third this :(

The big chip on the board gets very hot, don't ask me how I know.

Ok, I'll tell you. I got hasty in confirming all was well after soldering all wiring and then mounting the board in a Jonniemac mod, and plopped the battery in wrong. I'd already confirmed it worked prior with just the battery holder connected. Anyhow, after I put the battery in backwards, I felt the holder warming, so I yanked the wire off the contact (solder was soft). No smoke let out of anything, but the chip was a goner in just those few seconds. I touched around the DNA a bit, and that chip was hot as fire. It became my "improve soldering skills" chip before hitting the garbage can.

Is there any room left for that?

I haven't built a single unit developed by Gdeal to say it's possible either way, but based on the size of the mosfet, if you were so inclined to include one in your build, I would bet you could make it fit. Would most likely involve some modifying of the internals+outside
