Is the button light coming on when you push it? If not, tap it five times quickly in a row -- if it blinks, try pushing it again. (I think mine showed up with click protection on and I freaked out.)

I pushed it 5 times to turn it on and sometimes it blinks randomly. Does this mean I need to charge it more? It produces the heating sound when I use the default cartridges, but it's a very weak draw. It doesn't make a sound with the 1.7's

Hm. If it was low in charge then it might run that atomizer but not the LR cartomizer. If it's blinking when you push the button while the carto's screwed in, then the battery's almost dead.

Make sure you're charging it in a KGO charger -- it'll fit an Ego charger, but it won't work. I had to use a silver Sharpie to label them, otherwise I'd get them confused. I've also found that sometimes if the battery or cable gets jostled on one of my chargers, it'll stop charging (which is highly annoying). If it still needs charging, It should blink when you screw it in and the light come on as red.

If it's firing on one atty/cart and not on another, it could be as simple as a post issue. The center piece on the bottom of an atty is press fit, even though it looks like all one piece, and sometimes gets pushed up a bit,, which cause the atty to not connect to the battery properly. Try sticking a small screwdriver in the hole at the bottom of the atty, angle it and pull a bit. It rarely requires much more than a wiggle. There are multiple youtube vids that deal with post pulling, so definitely check one out if my comment isn't clear. TBH, post pulling made no sense to me until I watched a video on it. When my net stops being buggy, I'll try and find ya one.

I'm guessing the 1.7s you are referring to are the smoketec xls (also known as the ressurector from CCV). They have a huge fanbase, but a popular alternative is the boge lr ~2.0 ohm cartos. I've tried both and I'm partial to the ressurector simply because they work on a larger tank, but the boges are excellent as well. Crystal Clear Vaping has both of them for pretty darn cheap and they are a great company to work with. If you are interested in trying something else, the boges would be my first suggestion. If you haven't tried the smoketechs, pick up a couple of them as well. Always good to do side by side comparisons.
