Problems with high VG juices with Smokeless Image CE3s, Boge LR cartos ... am I doing it wrong?

I bought an SI Volt starter kit a couple weeks ago -- my most recent foray into vaping since some crappy kit I bought back in '08. I immediately got some headaches and real bad chest pains (worse than analogs!) so I tried a lower mix of PG/VG (50/50) from MBV (Vanilla Butternut and Brown Sugar), and ordered some Boge LR XXL cartos, plus a 510-to-808 adapter. I found out that the adapter won't work with the auto battery, which is what I had, so I ordered a manual from Smokeless Image (I like the cigarette-style form) as well as some CE3 clearos. The vanilla butternut was perfect. But I could never get a good result from the Brown Sugar -- it was either burnt tasting or didn't produce any vapor. It worked well enough in a carto, so I was able to enjoy it, but I was still having throat/chest issues. I put another order in to MBV for 70% VG/30% distilled water juices (Vanilla Butternut again, Morning vape, and a blend-your-own I was tinkering with). No more headache, no more sore throat, no more painful chest.

HOWEVER, I'm having some problems and I'm not sure if I'm screwing up. I tried to clean out the CE3 that had the brown sugar in it, using the method from the SI website, and then filled it with morning vape. It tasted like ... burning incense ... or something nasty. Plastic burning, sorta. Thinking maybe I had ruined it when the brown sugar might have burned, I opened a new one. I opened another one to put the DIY blend in. Same thing. I tried cleaning both out, even tried a dry burn as some recommended, but ... same result. Burning flavor.

I'm wondering -- am I doing something wrong? Is this because it's a high VG liquid? This morning, I took a puff from the DIY one, and the burning flavor was gone, but then came back after a couple of puffs. Am I going to have to just stick to cartos for the VG/H2O blend? The confusing thing is that the vanilla butternut works fine, which is the same kind of blend. Is it maybe something with the flavoring (both have a cherry taste in common)? Can I salvage these CE3s, or did I just ruin them?

Also, with the Boge cartos, I get plenty of vape but absolutely no flavor, no matter what I have in there. Is that because I bought low-resistance ones? Should I have gotten the SR (I think it means standard resistance)? Is that from high VG liquid?

Sorry for the rambling. Hopefully that made sense!

Sounds like your having dry hits. Try thining out your juice.

Higher VG juice will clog the coil quickly. After you dry burned did you rinse it out really well? The gunk turns to ash and has to be washed out. As for flavor high VG juice will mute flavor.

/facepalm. Makes perfect sense to rinse it after dry burning. Any recommendations on how long to dry burn? I did three or four 3 second pulses on the manual. Is that enough? Too much?

Outlaw Vaper has some really great SI vids. Here he discusses 2 diff methods of cleaning. Starts at 27:08

Awesome video. Thank you!

That's a safe bet. Sometimes if my coils are really gunked up I'll do it longer BUT realize there's the chance of burning out the coil. I've sometimes done an 8 second dry burn but not recommended. Darker juices also contribute to coil gunk.

You're welcome. Outlaw Vaper is the resident know it all for SI products...I say that in a respectful tone.

Did you mean with the Boge cartos? I've been trying to get the polyfil as saturated as possible (even using a long needle to make some space between the carto wall and the polyfil so it can reach the bottom). I get plenty of vapor and a bit of flavor, but not the same as with the CE3 or a Smokeless Image cartos that I'm reusing.

UPDATE

Looks like the problem with the CE3 was dry hits, as had been mentioned.

Apparently thick juices like these don't easily fill back into the atomizer when the CE3 has been cleaned. After filling the clear part, use your finger to cover the bottom home (that screws in) and suck a few times. The liquid level should drop (indicating the liquid was sucked into the atomizer). Top off, clean up (some will leak out) and go. No problems at all! (Except for the brown sugar, which I just don't think will ever work in a CE3.)

As for the Boge cartos, the adapter I have lets in too much air between the carto and the adapter -- it doesn't screw in all the way and is kind of airy. Looks like it suffers some flavor because of that.

welcome to the world of vg.
toss the ce3.
use good rebuildables.
cartos clog and don't last too long on pure vg. at least for me.
i use 100% vg.
if your getting dry hits, you might need to turn the volts down just a little.
rinse your head/coil after every tank and keep it clean.

they make an adapter collar/sleeve/skirt that is adjustable to control the airflow.
