I never though I'd be doing another Screwdriver review!
Why?
Three things persuaded me (not including "what not, what the hey" and curiousity):
1) SDs are a sort of "retro vape" to me - my first big battery device was a Mk1 SD purchased in April 2009.
2) All my old SDs are 901 fitting - I still use a couple of them with things like HH.357 901/306 hybrid atomisers but most bigger atomisers look silly mounted on a skinny little adapter
3) It was only £35
What did I get?
I ordered mine before they were up on the website and I got a free leather case with mine (I have been a good customer over the years
). Inside was:
The chrome plated steel "core body" is basically the same as the old Mk2 18350 SD, but seems better made and finished. Apart from the that, everything is different. The most obvious thing at first glance is the locking button - here it is in the "on" position:
And here is a close up:
The "other end" shows some obviously difference too:
There are good slots for airflow, the top has slanted edges and there is a side fitting for a lanyard. To be honest, I don't like the lanyard thing but it does stop the SD rolling about. It can be removed, but that leaves a hole:
The inside of the body is different too:
Overall, and particularly consider the price, the SD Mk3B seems well made and robust and should stand up to a fair amount of abuse.
Whats it like to use?
I tried it out with two atomisers, first my Sophia:
And then with my eBaron Dripper Spiral:
The eBaron suits it in my opinion. Both atomisers worked fine. The SD is as nice to hold as the Mk2 (not quite as nice as the original 16340 Mk1 though). I have two small criticisms: the button throw is a bit too long, and the button spring takes a tad more pressure than I prefer - small things but worth consideration for the future?
The button is "user serviceable", so I took it apart... Here are its components:
It shouldn't be difficult to find a softer spring...
In conclusion
The Mk3B SD is a nice update of an "old school" classic mod and should appeal those fancying something "retro". It is also well made for the price and should suit those who want something that will stand up to some heavier treatment.
I forgot to add - for those who want a mod that can also be used for self-defence, there is an 18650 version available. (I have an ELA for that
)
