Well I bought the rope as was recommended and hated it.

I'd be willing to try Nicotime's silica braid, I trust his judgement.

Looks good.

He's been building atties longer than most have been vaping.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Willy...but I'm still learning myself! :toast:

I'm gonna throw this FYI update in here....I wanted to see if the wick I get from MSC had thicker strands in the larger diameter sleeves...so I got some 2" stuff...but it has the same size strands...just more of it. BUT....the bigger stuff is a better buy...I weighed the two sleeves and both are exactly two feet....93 grams for the 2" and 24 grams for the 3/8"....so it boils down to the 3/8 sleeve costing $0.26 @ gram and the 2" costing $0.16 @ gram. The largest they have...3"...would probably be better still. If you do get this stuff remember to boil and rinse it before you take it apart..makes it much easier. It will actually start to unravel by the time your done boiling it. Even with a foot or two of the 3/8..you will have a lot of wick.

The 9v battery is not included...its just for size comparison....LOL

The rope I got was from McMaster-Carr. That was recommended in Vaporer's original posts.

McMaster-Carr

#3

In his defense though they were just using a tiny smidgen in a 510 size coil. This stuff was almost impossible to work with, and getting long strong pieces just wasn't happening.

And hitting with a flame (gas stove, torch lighter) never brought it back to 'white' (like a CE2 wick would do), just a kinda dark, dingy grey. And if I rubbed it between my fingers to clean it, it just fell apart.

RockingRobbie has been using the ceramic rope (alumina silicate), #6

McMaster-Carr

He claims it works well, I just don't know about the safety of ceramic, and actually even the silica rope.

There are many types of silicates I guess, but the stuff in the pic just didn't cut it.

I got my #3 rope from MCMaster tonight, aswell as my ss400 mesh from GB. The good folks at the Mesh company were nice enough to give me 5 sheets for the price of 2, like many others have received. I haven't had a chance to even mess with the ss yet. Looks like that takes a bit more care to use.

I did however, find time to rebuild a CE2 with the silica. So far it is working better than the original CE2 a bit. Needless to say I am pleasantly surprised. First go at rolling my own coil:vapor: I used 36g nichrome, and ohm'd out at 3.0 on the button. I normally buy 2.4-2.6ohm CE2s, but this at 3 seems to be a better all around vape (@3.7v).

The strands I am getting off the #3 rope aren't brittle or weak at all. Wicking is.. dare I say spot on? I chain vaped on it for quite a while, not a hint of dryness or burnt. I just used two full stands of the rope and wrapped the coil. Still the first night, but I am happy. Maybe wicking slows over usage time?

Rambling a bit, but I just didn't want to start a new thread to talk about my first rebuilt ce2 xD

Typical UPS shipping rate..how much is McMasters? The good part is that you get your stuff in a day or two depending on where you live. The 3/8 I got came from PA and the 2" had to ship from GA...they upgrade the shipping automatically at no charge and I got both the next day. The really good part is you will never have to buy any again in your lifetime....so how much would buying cartos, attys and the shipping run for that? Plus its not the twisted up mess that McM has!

Oh and they have Nichrome 80/20 wire also...but you have to buy a 1/4 lb spool....but again..less than a carton of smokes for a lifetime supply!

@WillyB...if that stuff turned grey and turned to dust when firing it...I would bet that it is fiberglass and not silica. Way back when on my first test I did with silica and fiberglass..with identical coils, power and time on my breadboard...I let the wicks run dry and not long after the fiberglass disintegrated inside the coil and the silica was still fine....thats when I made my decision.

It didn't turn to dust, but I thought that it would be white underneath, so I just rubbed it between my fingers and it kinda just pulled apart. I've tried fiberglas, it just melts when over-torched. The silica rope had no problem with heat. Torching it when new produced the same dirty grey color.

As far as shipping it never hurts to email the company and ask it they could use USPS for a small order.

Good point nicotime, and good point also willyb, I guess I will try and work something out with them, or I could just pony up the cash. I am just worried that I may not be able to recreate the awesome vaping experience I have grown accustomed to with hh357 atties. Overpriced, maybe but I get 3-5 months out of them. Thanks for the help, and a link to a quality product.

Huh...dunno..the stuff I have has never turned grey no matter if its new or used. Yeah the fiberglass will melt like in that video clip I did...but when I did it in the coil and got it red hot...it was powder. I also got some of the rope type then also...bot when handling it I could see all the particles floating around in the sunlight..I didnt want that in my atty either. It had more of a short fibered cotton like texture to it....but it would take the heat the same as the silica sleeve.

You could try to ask them...they are pretty much set up for supplying businesses next day though. When I did all the ordering of tooling and shop supplies when I was machine shop super...I could order stuff before I left work around 7pm and it would be at the door at 8am the next morning guaranteed. Never hurts to ask though.

Yeah just depends on your situation mostly....best way to do it would be if a bunch of your buddies all go in on some...then its not so bad. And no...it wont guarantee a great vape..that would depend on the monster you build! Good luck in your quest either way! :toast:

If you get a good 3 months outta them I would not consider them over-priced. I often use the Smok eGo mega DCs for when I'm out and about. 3 months worth would be about $50. Smoking used to cost me $15 a day.

Its fiberglass..not silica...I wouldnt use it. The sizing on this stuff is not like rope where its a accurate dimension...the size is what the sleeve will fit around..like wire or whatever its protecting...without the weave opening up exposing the wire. Remember..your not using the whole thing as one piece..your unweaving it and using the strands.
