I had noticed something about the replacement heads for the PT2 that might lead to frustration for some. Most reviews for the Protank are positive, but there is also talk about "airy draw" and "gurgling" which I have had an issue with myself, on occasion. But, in my case, I think I figured out why. I have purchased replacment heads from 3 different sources, and I got 3 considerably differently designed heads. Take a look at the photos, but don't judge me on my mad picture taking skills!!! :) I took them with my phone, and these little guys are pretty small:

In the above photo you should be able to see that there is 3 different styles of chimneys on these units. The 2 outside were claimed to be "authentic Kanger", which I know that they did change their design atleast once so no huge concern. The one in the middle had no claims of being authentic, but works great in an Evod, but not so well in the PT2. There is a possibilty that the shorter chimney COULD lead to gurgling, but don't quote me on that. I think this is less of an issue than the differences between the units on the connecting end. If you look at the photo below, you will see that they do vary quite a bit between the 3:
PTheads2.jpg
As you see, the size of the hole is different in each one, which will vary the draw and in turn, if the draw is too tight you might end up getting some gurgling by actually drawing more liquid through the wick than the coil can burn off. But not only does the hole size vary, but the actual shape of the contact varys quite a bit also. It is hard to tell from the pic, but one of the 3 is completely flat, which gives a tighter draw. Too tight, in fact. I actually have to loosen the tank a bit just to create enough airspace to get it to vape. The other 2 have beveled edges, but they also vary as to how much bevel they have, and how it's shaped. After noticing this, when I see a post that says something about gurgling or airy draw, I can't help but wonder if it is the style of the head causing the issue. On the one with the long chimney, I can't even get that thing to malfunction! I have even put a cotton wick in so thin that it barely even touched the sides of the coil, but still no flooding or gurgling. While with the flat bottomed one I can't remember building a single coil in it that has functioned as it should. I am not saying that one is better than the other, but I can't help but wonder if this is an issue that might be getting overlooked by folks that are getting frustrated with their PT2. I have some more heads coming from fastech that were labeled "authentic" and appear to have the long chimney, but like I said before, it seems that the other end is more so where the problem occurs. Does anyone have any further insight on this topic that can go more indepth on the variances between these units?

Make your own coils, throw in your own wick, make sure the coil doesnt sit too low in the head...and you can adjust the amount of gurgle to nil pretty much...

I rebuilt one head and it was awful, like drinking juice through a straw...I had the coil too low! I had no idea, in the video in my blog RiP talks about making sure the coil is LOW in the head - I figured more is better right?

NO! ITS NOT! So when i adjust the coil to just sit below the cap but not touch it..the gurgles magically went away.

So keep that in mind, folks. And rebuild your Kanger coils, cuz stock Kanger coils suck ....

The coil head on the right is the correct one for the ProTank II. The longer chimney or shank is the correct length.

These coils will work for EVOD clearomizers too. The coil heads for the T3S and MT3S will NOT work in an EVOD or ProTank II.

Make sure you get genuine replacement heads. Discount Vapers has excellent prices on a 5-pack of heads for only $5.96 per pack.
That works out to $1.19 per head (roughly).

I rebuild my Kanger Protank II coils now and use Kanthal ribbon wire .4mm x .1mm around a 2mm Ekowool hollow braided wick (it's not truly hollow as there are small strands of wick in the center portion) with a 1mm Ekowool flavor wick resting on top. No problems now with leaking or gurgling and a great vape! Coil head resistance is right about 2.3-2.4 ohms too. These heads are very easy to rebuild.

Yeah, I have built quite a few and I couldn't imagine just replacing them and throwing them out, even though that was their designed purpose. I enjoy building them, and I like the performance of mine better. I use 32 gauge kanthal and cotton wick usuall wrap 2.4+ ohm coils. I have noticed that when you start using a higher resistance coil they ain't nothing to write home about. But after you have fired it several times and been vaping it, it really seems to perk up as far as how fast it fires and the vapor production. It makes sense that more wraps equal more surface contact.(ribbon wire is a plus here) But as far as the better performance after a little use, do you think that maybe it has made the coil more porous by heat expansion?

no, you need to condition burn (aka dry burn with no wick (cotton) or with wick in (silica)) the heating/cooling creates a thin layer of oxidation on the wire ensuring it fires evenly across the coils

If you notice on new coils they usually won't fire evenly for the first 3-5 heat cycles...then after that they glow evenly. Without first conditioning the coils they end up conditioning while you use it..thus it "perks up" as the coils start heating evenly instead of hot spotting

Yes Kanger made a change, But that is when I stopped buying their coils.

Original Protank coils - Long Chimney
Original Evod - Short Chimney

New Kanger Protank/Evod Coul - long chimney

Clone coil is Evod Clone - with smaller hole - tighter air draw

Gurgle is from 1 things:
To little wick for e-liquid density
Poor Seal at Chimney to Pipe

Chimney length does not matter and there are actually available coils with NO chimney, just the seal cap.

* also note - some secondary supplier coils(sounds better than clone doesn't it) use divverent wick layouts. Kanger 2 (1mm) flavor wicks
Some others 1 (2mm) flavor wick
Both designs work...................or don't. Depending on your application and ability to tweak.
