Protank Rebuld issues

Hi fellow Vapers!

Recently i rebuild my protank coil and using 33guage nichrome (coz i can't seem to get kanthal) With 5/4 and 6/5 wraps getting 2 and 2.3ohms respectively. I use 2mm Silica and 2-3 strands as flavour wicks.

My question is, using 3 strands seems to get the flavour muted and 2 strands i seem to be vaping the juice. anyone else having this problem?

If anyone would be so kind to share their protank rebuild for best vapour and throat hit would be GRATEFUL!!:D

PS. I only have dont have access to the good stuff current supplier MIA.

THANKS!

I never had any leaking issues with silica, but I've found that I get better flavor with cotton. On the Protanks, I tend to use yarn. I picked up a cone of white Peaches and crème yarn at WalMart for $9 that will probably last me until the end of time, lol. I do tend to boil the yarn, and sometimes it seems to give an off flavor for 5 to 10 pulls, but then it tastes great. I do find that Protanks in general tend to mute flavors. I use them at work for ease, but at home, I tend to use either drippers or a Kayfun 3.1

Most recent build was 30 ga kanthal 8 wrap micro coil on 16 ga syringe needle. Organic cotton ball wick not boiled or anything, no flavor wick. Came in at 1.7 ohm and vapes beautifully. No floods or gurgles and no dry/burnt hits no matter how much I vape on it. I love the cotton wicks for these kanger coils.

IMO flavor wicks do nothing to help flavor, they only mute it. They are extra stuffing in order to help prevent flooding. It actually baffles me that just about all pre-made coils are so bad that they use flavor wicks.

Personally I haven't used silica since about my third day of rebuilding coils, its a nightmare to use properly, except in a few rare cases.

Since I figured out the build below, I have rarely strayed from it with protank coils. It is by far the easiest, fastest build that I know of. It is consistent, I have never experienced any flooding, nor dry hits.

Specs:
Wrapped on a 1/16th inch precision screwdriver
30 AWG Kanthal A-1
8 wraps (micro/contact coil)
1 strand of peaches n cream cotton yarn.

This comes out to 1.8 ohms.

Where to get stuff:
Screwdriver sets kick the snot out of drill bits with regards to building coils. Home depot has several different cheap sets available, but the thing I like the most is this. The small screwdriver is 1/16th and the large is 1/8th, which is perfect for RDAs.

Kanthal is by far best purchased from Temco themselves. All the kanthal, cheap! Nobody I have found can beat their prices. I get most stuff within two days of order.

Peaches n cream cotton yarn is the greatest thing that happened in my vape career, ever. It is consistent! Having built probably about a thousand coils with organic cotton balls, I still sometimes get the wick a bit off, it is truly a masters art. The wicks are passable, but not perfect. Yarn on the other hand wicks only a tiny bit slower than cotton balls, and is the same, every single time. Walmart sells it for $1.50 for a hundred feet. Get the ekru variety as it is untreated, undyed.

Thanks for the quick reply everyone!

I tend to get condensation when i remove the drip tip after half tank and its quite a lot, maybe 2 drops. Anyone else has this?

for cotton, can i use my 33guage nichrome?

Never used nichrome but don't see why it wouldn't work.

You can, your nichrome wire is equivilent to 32 gauge kanthal A-1. Its quite high resistance, and not really ideal for protanks, but you can indeed use it.

As an example, if you followed the build I just mentioned in another post, using the nichrome instead of 30 gauge kanthal, you would end up with 2.85 ohm resistance coils. So you would have to cut back on the wire quite a bit using the 33 gauge nichrome. The problem there is that the coils are already tiny, now your having to make them even tinier. Coupled with the fact that the wire is very thin, your going to get very little wick to coil contact, which may actually be where all your problems are coming from in the first place.

IMO, get some 28/30 gauge kanthal asap. Outside of a few specific low gauge wire builds I use for RDAs, those are my go to wires for just about every application.

Thanks so much for the detailed reply! But fact is, i CAN'T get any of the good stuff because i live in a place that bans and deem illegal for any of that stuff. Sadly i would really like to try kanthal in microcoil with cotton. But oh well i have to work with what i have.

And i only have those stuff i used. So, if i use 6/5 wraps @ 2.3ohm on 4.5V removing the flavor wicks will not flood in tank? I have had flooding in my protank 2 before when the coil is around 2 weeks old it just floods like crazy, leaking all over. No idea why though.

Ooooo Singapore, silly me didn't look at your location

I found this with my google-fu Qoo10 - Kanthal A-1 Resistance Wire : Home Decor / DIY

Thats shipped from singapore, to singapore. It would be kinda wierd for kanthal wire to be illegal since it is basically just wire used in all sorts of heating elements. Then again, singapore does have some very stringent laws.

If you follow the build I posted above, with 6 wraps that will get you 2.2 ohms. See what cotton yarn you can get, surely you can get that? If not your going to have to try with cotton balls. Its a bit of a nightmare though to be honest. Your going to have to play around a bit with wicks to get it just right. You want the dry wick to fit snugly inside the coil, not super loose, but it should still move quite freely.

Big tip for cotton ball wicks in a protank: Once you have built it, and have the post on, fluff the wick poking out the holes as much as you can. If you see any gaps at all then your going to get flooding. The fluffier you can get it, the better.

Btw, 1/16th inch is equivalent to about 1.6mm.

ok guys just did a 5 wrap around a tooth pick and got a reading of 2ohms using 33guage nichrome. tried cotton ball as wick i roll small piece and pull it through till it fits snug. tried one straight out the bag and another that i boiled for a good 5 minutes.

I have to say cotton is different from silica, little more flavour and more throat hit.but i dont know if its it my mind but there is a funny feeling at the back of the throat, vapor around 15% more than silica. No flavour wicks needed , no leaks.

So far i am liking this, only thing is when rewicking, when i pool the cotton out it tends to move the coil a little out of shape. Anyone have this problem?

I just reshape my coil when changing wicks. Use the original tool used to wrap and some tweezers to push things around. I also played around with how much cotton to use so as not to allow it to flood and not screw up my coil when pulling the old one out. I'm still not great at it but I love the flavor and vapor production of my own Kanger rebuild than the bought ones.
