I encountered another issue w/ my mechanical switch and opened a ticket, waiting on resolution. The new longer button is not the same diameter as the original button, thus the copper contact ring does not sit snug on it. I set my Protege down, button up, and evidently the copper ring sat on the aluminum contacts as opposed to retracting with the button. I only noticed when I smelled my atomizer burning up (literally).

Back to the tact switch...........

I had this problem too. Mine will actually fall off the new long button.
I cut a really thin piece of gaffer's tape under it to help hold it in place.

I shot casey a message about this same problem.. The copper piece was sliding down the plungr and making contact. I was thinking i would just glue it in place with some zap-a-gap, but steve suggested i just crimp the sides a bit with a needle nose plier. Worked like a champ.

I also noticed the smaller outside diameter of the spring retaining post on the long button which allows the metal ring to slide freely on the post. I haven't yet found a way to snug it up. My manual switch started out fine but soon quit working with the adapter fully mounted. The only way I can get it to work now is to unscrew the adapter 1/4 turn. What's up with that? I'm starting to think my Protege is jinxed.

Ah I was wondering if crimping would work without throwing alignment off too much. I may give that a shot then.

When you put it on the new post, squeeze it the least little bit to make it tight. They're all done that way. The copper ring is so smooth on the inside it's slippery.

hell that's a grand idea. mine was also a tad wider and i worried about it sliding down and contacting, but figured LIGHTLY touching it wouldn't be enough force to activate it.

off to crimp.

Gaff tape? So I wonder who besides you and me know what that is, without looking it up. What do you do for a living again?

lol I actually use it on my hula hoops for grip tape.
And my Husband bums it from me for a wrestling show he works at to keep the AV wires down.

For example...

Needless to say, I have a ton of color's lmao
It's pretty spiffy to decorate my pv's with also. My protege is now turquoise and purple ( 1/2" spike tape)

Hmmmmmm, I've been thinking about getting a Protege for quite some time now, but kind of backed off. It has been some time, but just remember people were having issues with the button. I'm assuming that was the tactical button that people were having issues with.

From what I'm reading, it sounds like they have worked things out, sounds like there may be some issues retro-fitting existing Proteges, but I'm sure those tweaks can be worked out through instructions/procedures.

Anyways, I'm more interested in the status of newly ordered Proteges. Web site description of the Protege mentions it has a mechanical button, does this imply new orders come with the improved button or are some having issues with this set-up too?

New Protege's ordered now come with the mechanical switch already on board. There have been some issues with the "length" of the push rod - some too long others too short but those get fixed/replaced in a heart beat.

It's a great PV!! The passthru add-on is also a very slick touch but then again, Cash and Casey are a slick crowd :)

I have the mechanical buttons (replacements) for both of my Protege's.
I've converted one of them and the other I left with the tact switch for comparison.

After a little breakin period i think the one with the mechanical switch probably passes a little more wattage to the atty but in all honesty the original always worked fine for me.

I schmoked a couple of the tact switches from overtightening and DOA (shorted out) 901 attys but once I went to cartomizers I never had another issue. (except for the fact that i'm hooked on carts)

The Protege's are really nice units. The V2 is also an excellent machine.
Only problem with the V2 is that it's almost impossible to stealth vape due to the huge plumes of vapor it produces. LOL :w00t:

Are you talking about the USB Extension or USB Adapter? Can't really figure out what the adapter does, the extension looks like it just replaces the battery allowing you to plug into a USB port. OR, do you need both?

I was one of those with a hiccup on the mech switch but it's working great after the new long button. I would highly recommend one.
I like mine so much I finally gave up my Prodigy v1 and the protege is it for me now.
Even thought of getting a second as back up (especially if I can get in a leopard print
* hint hint* lol)

I probably would go with the 901, just because I have quite a few 901 attys. I do have a few 801's for my Janty Stick, but never did take to the 801's (e.g. seems to be less throat hit), mainly just use the JS for traveling.

Never tried cartomizers, don't really know what they are, sounds like a one-time-use atty/pre-filled cart. Is that correct?

it's working great after the new long button.

Wench, you mentioned you had issues with the mechanical switch, long button fixed it. When did you get your Protege? Wondering if new orders comes with long button or is it luck of the draw.

Thanks all, great info.

I was one of the first one's that ordered and it was a small # of us that hauled rear to order that had short button's lol
It was quickly fixed with long button's being standard.
