Hi guys, new to vaping (only abt. 10 days now) with some experience related mostly to unfortunate events involving batteries.

Got myself a kit with 2 batteries, 1 worked the other didn't. Got replacement now the one that worked died on me leaving me with 1 working battery.

Been wandering around the forum to see if i'm the unluckiest rookie and turns out there are many like me. Some getting new batteries, some back to analogs, and the rest either modding their batteries or getting the battery casings like protege and such.

Is there a term for devices like protege or screwdriver and are there other brands beside those 2 i can consider? Cos i'd hate to go back smoking analogs due to technicality and trying to find another solution.

Thanks :)

Such devices are often referred to as "mods" but it would be more honest to call them "big battery holders". There is a list of a lot of them here with a useful overview:

E-cig News: A run-down of all the big battery model e-cigarettes on the market

That is an excellent compilation and it keeps being updated! [I see that more models have been added since I first linked to it in Part 2 of my WWV Illustrated Guide in early September.] It is a bit suprising the Puresmoker's $115 Protégé (younger brother to Prodigy) is not included, since it was released prior to the XHaler.

It covers the NicoStick (mother of the box mods), but a particular derivative of it has taken on a life of it's own and deserves mention: cybervex’s $50 Bartleby:

But this industry changes so fast that even more mods have come out recently:
  • The $99 Spade, a black aluminum version of the stainless steel VP1.

  • Eastmall's Indulgence ($59 + $15 shipping from China). It looks like a Little Chuck in gold (also available in silver and titanium), as shown in this photo (which also conveys the marketing style being used;)).

  • Janty's $80 eGO – technically not a mod, since has a custom battery rather than battery housing. But, at 600 mAh, it behaves like one ... and it looks a little like the Spade.

  • What may be the ultimate triple mod is Carlos' Juice Box. 'Triple' because it is a battery box housing + first US-built atomizer + semi-automatic juice injection. It is now available for website sale from Alien Visions E-juice for $90. Shown here is an earlier version.

Lots of choices, huh?!
