Protege USB Adapter, or USB Extension? Differences?

I see both of these offered for the Protege, but I don't see what/how they are used?

Could someone tell me the difference, what the best application would be for each, or are they used in conjuction? I am a little confused?

The USB adapter for the Protege will work on the first (V1) of the PT passthru or the Protege in USB mode.

The USB extension turns your Protege into a USB passthru.

Ok.. so if I want to use my protege plugged into my computer.. I purchase both of these items???

The adapter is the part the atomizer screws onto. If you already have the Protege you have the adapter. If you don't have a Protege buy the full kit, it comes with an adapter.

You know, it is kind of confusing. What does the USB stand for in USB Adapter? I know it's has nothing to do with my computer USB. Whereas the USB extension is a special part that you can screw into the battery compartment to make the Protege a 5v USB passthrough.

The same adapter fits the Protege and the new stainless steel USB Passthrough which is powered through a USB port, not to be confused with the USB Extension which turns the Protege into a USB passthrough.
Did I just confuse you more?

Here, I'll give it a try.

The adapter is what you screw the atomizer onto.
The usb extension for the protege allows you to use it as a passthrough.

The adapters are interchangeable between the Protege and the Passthrough.

I have both the Passthrough and the Protege with USB extension. (and Prodigy)

So, on the go, I use the Protege with the battery, and Prodigy depending on my mood.

When I get home, I take the battery out of the Protege, insert the usb extension and use it in passthrough mode. (connected to wall charger or Kensington Battery)

I also, switch from the 510 adapter to the 801 adapter, because going from battery to USB increases your power from 3.7v to 5v. and I like 801's at 5v and 510's at 3v.

I keep my dedicated passthrough in the car with 801 adapter attached.

Yes, the USB extension will turn your Protege into a USB Passthrough. Plug into computer at your own risk. You'll be safer and get better performance with this: USB Dual Power Adapter

As for the Atomz, I assume you mean 808 not 801. The adapters are available for pre-order and should ship early next week, last we heard.

I did mean 801. I have an 801 adapter on my protege and I want to use the atomz. Do I need another adapter for my 801 adapter or do I have to buy a different adapter to use the atomz?

Different adapter, just went up for pre-order today. It's the 901/808 adapter. You could get a different adapter to work with the 901 but it won't be as good, at least from my experience with the dual adapter setup.

edit: just went up for preorder yesterday, yikes it's late here... ;-)
