According to the specs, the DNA30 has a 94% efficiency; the dna 20 has 93%. I'm thinking that there wouldn't be a meaningful difference in run time. But not being an engineer, I'm talking through my hat here.

I do like the shorter time-out (and I agree Rossum -- why that's not configurable is odd) and the fact that the wattage can be locked on the DNA30 to prevent it changing when pressed accidentally, such as when it's in your pocket.

Then again, I've yet to have an accidental in-pocket wattage change with the XPV due to the design of the rocker switch, so the locking feature probably won't get used should there be an XPV DNA30 in the future.

I doubt you'll see a significant difference, and some of it might be attributable to the shorter (2 minutes vs. 4 minutes) screen time-out. Why the screen timeout still isn't configurable is a real head-scratcher to me. Personally, I'd be fine with it at 15 seconds.

From what I have read, even when putting the DNA20 into screen off mode, you don't really gain any additional runtime.

Additional efficiency would come from components with better specs and higher quality, which I assume is exactly what they needed to do to get 30 watts out of something the same exact size, safely.

I work with a ton of battery backup / un-interuptable power supply systems in my day job, which really there is a lot of similarities to managing the load on those, and managing the load on our ecigs, the exact same principles are in use, just at much higher amount of volts/amps/watts on the U.P.S systems.

There are HUGE differences in efficiency between our 3000 watt U.P.S systems, and our 5000 watt ones, same manufacturer, same line of U.P.S

You are probably right in that there won't be huge gains in our little PV's, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the DNA30 get longer runtime then a DNA20 at the same power level.

It could go the other way also I suppose, and the DNA30 could potentially be less efficient for some reason.

Thanks for that, I didn't catch that when I was looking at the spec sheet.

Yea I don't know that we will notice 1% :)

I wonder if that's 93%/94% at full power, with it curving over the range of power output, or if it is the same efficiency at all output power levels.

If it is the same at all output power levels, then we wont notice anything.

If it is more or less efficient at lower vs higher power, there may be some noticeable change in the under 20 watt range.

The other possibility is that the DNA20 was capable of doing 30 watts all the long, and they just flashed some software on there that lets it.

I can't wait to see a a high quality pic of the DNA20 and DNA30 board next to each other .

Hmm... According to the spec-sheet, it takes 25 mA to run the display. If it were left on continuously, the display alone would drain a 2500 mAh battery in around 4 days. So I wouldn't consider the display to be insignificant. I don't have my Protovapor yet, but most of the time when I pick up my Vaporshark, the display is still on. (Yes, I vape a lot). So let's say the display is on 12 hours per day; that means over the course of a day, the display alone has used 1/4 of the capacity in the 1200 mAh battery...

There are two reasons why I ordered a Protovapor instead of second Vaporshark: 1) To get 2900 mAh of battery capacity in a device with all the same features, and 2) To get a device on which a bigger topper (like a 22mm carto-tank or an RBA) won't be out-of-place; the Vaporshark was clearly designed for 19mm toppers.

The pics in the PDF datasheets are pretty decent and the boards are clearly different.

BTW, from Protovapor's home page:

Shipping status 1/15, DNA 30D
Submitted by protovapor on Wed, 01/15/2014 - 09:21

Current lead time: 3-5 business days

We do plan to offer the DNA 30D in our full-size XPV models. At this time ETA is roughly 2 weeks. We are not rushing it to market, and will spend some time testing to make sure we can continue to stand behind our product.

Yea I would assume the display actually would have an impact, I just remember seeing a reputable video review of..... hmm I can't remember, I think it was the VS DNA, and I remember them saying they tested it and didn't find more then a few mins of difference in use in their case.

I think you are probably right though, that it would have an impact, especially if you are vaping in such a pattern that keeps it on frequently, like most of us would :)

It's here! SN0119.

Since it shipped from Honolulu, I decided I should try and make it feel at home:

pKr1zwF.jpg

But when I hit the button, all I saw on the display was "Too Cold".
(J/K, but it's only in the low 50s here in NE Florida at the moment).

Now I realize that tiny topper (a 19mm standard length IBT) makes the XPV look bigger than it really is, so for some perspective, here it is next to some other devices:

cZPa4GI.jpg

Oh, and it fits very nicely in my shirt pocket:

TZmLVf3.jpg

Of course any of my other devices will "fit" in there as well, but none of them feel very secure in there; in fact they tend to fall right out if I bend over. The XPV's clip keeps that from happening, partly because it's lighter than one would expect. I don't have a decent scale here, but it's noticeably lighter than the MVP, despite somewhat bigger battery capacity.

So how does it vape? Well, like a DNA-20. :vapor:

My little carto-tank in the first pic actually seems to vape better on the XPV than on the Vaporshark; I think the difference is better airflow. The carto-tank is noisy on both devices, but not quite as noisy on the XPV.

Anyway, the bottom line is: I like it!

I was toying with the idea of ordering a ZNA tomorrow, but right now, I'm having second thoughts about that.

Now where's my Squape? And my bigger IBTs? :?:

Looks good Rossum! I also was toying with the idea of a ZNA order but, after having the regular and the mini XPVs in hand, the urge has passed. (Replaced, of course, with the urge to get an XPV with a DNA30 when it comes out!)

The ZNA looks great, especially the limited edition model, and I'm sure the build quality is up to Zen standards. But but the price is steep and the advantage of Z2 threading would be lost on me since I don't have any Z2 toppers. Tried the Z2 carto when it came out, but was unimpressed and sold it.

It's funny, but the XPV mini doesn't appeal to me much, primarily due to its low battery capacity; sorry but 700 mAh is just not enough, particularly when the Vaporshark has 1200 in a very hand and pocket friendly form-factor.

The ZNA does look great, and I'd buy one in a New York Second had a built-in charger like the XPV and Vaproshark do. To me, that would be the ultimate power source: DNA powered with easily swappable batteries and a built-in charger. But sadly, Zen doesn't seem to have made any provision for the charger.

I'm puzzled by the Z2 carto-tank. I haven't seen one in person, but the giant metal top cap doesn't make much sense to me; seems like it's giving up capacity in order to make it look similar to their Z2 RBA? Of course, neither a carto-tank nor a Genesis style RBA are state-of-the art atomizers....

I don't know much about the Zen stuff, but it seems to me that they have a great marketing campaign, not really all that innovative products, and a high price point.

I do like the idea of getting away from the 510, but I don't think giving up 510 for another proprietary, weird un-standard threading solution is making any progress. (maybe it is a common threading, I am not really sure on this, correct me if wrong)

And yes, the ZNA with USB charging would be pretty sweet, without that, it kind of voids one of the main selling points of the DNA board to me.

Uh what?

Mine is not a screw, and upon taking it apart, it is clear it couldnt be, it is a regular 510 with the center pin just sitting in a silicon insulator and soldered to some wire.

Pictures please!

Got this lousy picture above your quote (sorry folks). All I know is when I get the check atty error, which is often as I switch tanks a lot. I just put a small screwdriver in the slot of the center post and give it half a turn and I am back in business.

I don't think their prices are out-of-line for stuff that's "Made in USA". I think we sometimes get spoiled by the prices of stuff made in huge quantities in the far east.

I don't think that M20 x 1.5 is particularly common, but neither is M7 x 0.5 or M12 x 0.5 (outside of vaping world anyway). ;)

Exactly. Especially when traveling, who wants to deal with yet another piece of gear (a separate battery charger)? This is one of the reasons a Provari never had much appeal to me. :D

Hmm.. You clearly don't have the "Flush mount" 510 connector on yours. Here's what mine looks like:

Ah yours is the eGo top cap, mines the flat 510, which is sealed and has no flathead groove.
