The Provari satin black is "The Satin Black coating is a durable ceramic finish that won't fingerprint.". That is a process I believe that uses a electrostatic bonding and is baked on. Very hard to wear off. But if you want to protect it you can buy a cover or make one like I did using an old rope trick. Before plastic rope the ends would come unbound so they came up with what is called whipping. Here is a pick of what I put on my regular Provari. It also gives you a better grip which is important to me since I can be a klutz sometimes. LOL

Here is a link on how it is done: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CFkQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ropeworks.biz%2Freader%2Fwhipping.pdf&ei=9aeqUMPyD8382gWw3IHgCw&usg=AFQjCNFoPsdkr2esEM9J5twStzZJc-lRlg
It's not much trouble but make sure you us a dark nylon cord as it will not show stains and the nylon will hold up longer. Make sure you use a line/cord that is long enough because you can easily trim it later but you don't want to come up short near the end. I usually put a piece of electrical where I start the winding to give it something to hold on to. I also hid a id label under it in case it is lost or stolen.
