Just a silly question for knowledge, what is the purpose of an inline battery in a passthrough? I have made many PTs straight (cord, tube, connector, button) but some of the retail ones out there seem to have a battery.

the batty is there to be recharged as that is what is suppling the power to the PT. The power doesn't go directly to the ecig.
So far as I know, that's exactly how the battery passthroughs work. You're vaping off the battery, just like an OEM e-cig - you just have USB power running a charge chip topping the battery up between hits.
