Shortstop will arrest the current way too often if you go low-ohm. Proper coil building and being mindfull that the power doesn't get jammed on will be a better option.
Or...buy one and see if it works the way you vape...

I already have one but you're right... I think it'll cut out, didn't think about that.

About the needles.... I have a feed store nearby and already have small screwdrivers and drill bits... I guess I'm just nervous to roll my coils...... What does torching the kanthal do??? Should I use a shortstop in the reo? Or my kick??

Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4

i *think* torching mainly ensures you burn off any nasty manufacturing residue and may make it more malleable, but someone more knowledgeable than me will probably chip in.

i have a few vapesafe/shortstop type devices but have never dreamed of putting one in my REOs. not even sure how well they'd fit. REOs are known to have collapsible springs which make the fuses at best 'nice-to-haves', but unnecessary. i bought a Grand from the classies that came with a kick, but i haven't used the kick yet. i think you'd be better off experiencing your REO first w/o a kick, at least at first.

the ease that you'll discover of wrapping your own coils is proportional to your initial nervousness :)

i'm an old fart with bad eyesight and i only have one hand that actually works. i was pretty nervous at first, but was rapidly shocked at how easy it turned out to be. if you have an ohmmeter and even a hair of patience, you will find it a piece of delicious cake.

you missed out my vaping video! lol

I started with vivi novas too and used to rebuild them - if you can do that you will have no problem at all with an RM2 - they are about the easiest RBA i ever touched.

Depending on the coils you end up making (example - my wife likes 2.5Ω - i prefer 1) will influence how long between mod maintenance videos. I have to clean mine every 2 weeks - i have a grand and i just throw it in the sink and wash it - file the firing pin like i mean it and whack Noalox on it - that is the grey bag of goo that comes with the mod and it's not very tasty!

i waffled on too long and forgot to say welcome to the idiocy that is Reo ownership - but you get the idea!

The "torching" is actually changing the molecular structure of the wire - it's basically annealing, which means heating it over a certain temperature and then letting it cool on the air. It only takes seconds, but it makes the wire softer, less springy, and thus easier to work with.

Tempering, meaning heating it up a bit more and then quenching it in a fluid so that it cools very rapidly, makes the wire harder and more brittle.

So never quench the wire, just let it cool by itself.

Then there may be production chemicals on the wire, those will be burned off as well should they exist.

Then there is the oxidization layer that we need on the surface of the wire to avoid shortcuts. But that will happen by itself the first time you fire the coil.

Just torch the wire twice to a red or orange glow before using it for a coil and let it cool by itself, that's all that is needed. Any old Bic lighter works.

aah, noalox... that reminds me, i think i was on my 3rd or 4th Reo before i realized that grey stuff wasn't just a smudge on Rob's business card. i kept thinking "how could someone who builds such perfect mods be so damn sloppy about his business cards"

by the time i realized it was a baggie of noalox i'd already run to HD and bought a tube, which is more than i'll need in 100 lifetimes...

did i mention i had bad eyesight?

Jaysin- you will have no problems building coils :)

Now I want that ohm meter!! Seems sold out everywhere..... Also can I use my Samsung icr 18650 battery or is that bad?

if you have an APV that reads ohms (Vamo, Zmax, Provari- the list is endless) you already have an ohmmeter

to get the sold out one, best bet is to add your email to the "notify me" thingy on the site. when they get back in stock, they will usually sell out in hours or even minutes.

you can also use a cheapo ohmmeter with wire leads. i have a $5 one from Harbor Freight that works just fine if you mentally adjust for the wires resistance, if any.

i personally would not use any batteries that are not IMR. Reos were designed for the ones linked to on the Reosmods site.

A cool part of building coils is that you can alter the resistance (ohms) with varying wire gauge and the number of wraps. Plenty of threads about this but most use between 26g and 30g, so make sure to get some different sized resistance wire so you can play around until you find the coil build that hits the spot for you. I've never owned a kick, and don't think I need one on my grand with a 1.2 ohm 28g 10 wrap micro coil using a 1/16 drill bit. It hits like a champ.

I had an evic.... Broke it. I have a cheap harbor freight one also... I'll try that and just use my aw imr 18650...

i'd recommend you use the AW 1600 IMRs - for no other reason than i have melted things using anything else - i just happened to have a few 18650 lying around and they are all the same right? Nope!

Play it safe - they are not what i use now but i don't recommend anyone follows my path and the Grand was apparently designed with that battery as the power source.
