I have read that during the Civil War, cigars were used... similarly... as a general anesthetic in battlefield medicine. The colon absorbs chemicals into the bloodstream faster than anywhere else in the body, so slipping a cigar into the coal chute (as it were) was a fast way to knock a patient out.
