I am going in for back surgery on the 22nd. I am hoping to bring my Riva 510 with me. I am also bringing my laptop so, I can use that for charging. I know that nicotine is something that hinders recovery after surgery so, I am unsure how my PV will be received by the hospital. My pain management doctor though that vaping was great.

Has anyone had a hospital stay and brought their PV with them? How was it received? Did you discuss it with them when you went in prior to the surgery, when you filled out all of the paperwork? Were you told that it wasn't welcome after surgery.

I haven't had a hospital stay, but what density nicotine are you vaping....I can tell you that with 12mg/ml juice vaping 1½-2mls a day, my cotinine level (plasma indicated metabolic secretion in urine or saliva) is about at 100ng/l, which is the equivalent of passive second hand smoke.. and I'm sure it would not be an amount that would impair healing, unless you also have heightened blood pressure as a "norm". It may be something you could talk to your dr. about. My last hospital stay was when I was a smoker, and was given 20mg patches, even prior to surgery. That was after the smoking ban in hospitals. The surgery was horrendous, but I maintained myself on the patch for a couple months after that. Then I did the "step down", and went up the walls!! (again, back to cigarettes!)
So may be something you would want to look into as well.

I'm sorry to hear that LordDavon and I hope everything goes well for you. I know from personal experience that it's not just the nicotine that helps prevent your healing. It's all the tars, carcinogins (sp?). This is going to be a little bit of a long reply, but here's my story:
A little over a year ago, I started vaping with the BluCigs. I fell out of a friend's attic and broke my left tibia at the very tip. It was broken so badly that I had to have an external fixator (very scary looking thing) instead of a cast. I was in the hospital for a week total. I vaped the BluCigs while I was there and the dr's, nurses had no problems with it. I came home and started back on the analogs. My ortho dr told me every 2 weeks during my check-ups to quit smoking!! About 2 months later, still having a broken leg, I spent 4 days in the hospital with pnuemonia. Finally a very nice dr who was treating me explained why I HAD to quit smoking to heal my bone. You have red blood cells running all through your body that move everywhere to keep your organs, tissues, everything clean and healthy. When you smoke, the tars and nasty stuff in analogs build up on those red blood cells and prevent them from doing their job in healing and keeping your body healthy. My ortho dr never explained all of this to me, but this dr did. I came home, started back on my BluCigs and used the nic patch too. Not good, I know, but I wanted that damn bone healed and that hideous, heavy thing off of my leg! 2 weeks later, I went back in for my x-rays and guess what? Healed!! I spent a total of 4 solid months with a broken leg and all it took was 3 weeks of no analogs to make this difference. I started back with the analogs because I really was not satisfied with the BluCigs, but then I found this forum and the 510's about 2 months ago and I haven't smoked since. Now, my pain management dr also thinks that these PV's are great too, btw
I'm sorry that this is so long, but I wanted to let you know that it was not the nicotine, it was the analogs themselves
Good luck and keep us posted

Never apologize for a great and informative post like that. Thank you so much for the explanation and your time. That was exactly the response I needed.

Again. Thank you so much. That was excellent!

I recently converted my wife's Aunt to e-cigs due to a hospital stay. She was in the hospital for 5 days after breast cancer surgery and was worried about not being able to smoke. I had been using e-cigs for a few weeks and she asked about them. I ordered her a starter kit and some cartos and she was able to vape in the hospital after surgery. I'm happy to say the surgery was successful and she hasn't had an analog since!

I am not completely off of analogs yet so, this will be a way for me to break the routine of having that analog in the morning.

I think given that circumstances you will be able to do it.
I used to smoke about 1 PAD, but when I visit my parents I only smoked about 5 analogs/day... I don't want to smoke in front of them.

I am down to just a few analogs a day now. My mother is flying down to help me with my daughter while I am in the hospital and after. I am a single father of the worlds greatest 10-year-old. I should only be in the hospital for a day or two anyway. I can't smoke in front of my mother. Never could. Even at 39, she still calls me her baby.

You're very welcome- I am fortunate that this dr actually took the time to explain to me WHY. You get a little sick of hearing people, including doctors just tell you over & over to quit smoking! Really?? Isn't that what they're supposed to tell you?

I had a doctor harp on me about smoking years ago. I found out that he smoked.

It wasn't that he was wrong though. I was diagnosed with Chronic Pulmonary Fibrosis a few months ago. It turns out that I was born with a lung disease and smoking for 25 years made it worse.

My mother knows I smoke(d). She still asks me how I am doing with quitting. When I told her that I was diagnosed with CPF, she said, "You always did have problems breathing". I never knew.

I've seen that in some cases, the attending will prescribe Varenicline (Chantix) with a situation similar to that. I know you may be a bit loopy coming out of surgery, but you want to make sure that that aren't giving you that med, as using nicotine with it will cause you to feel sick. Quite frankly, I doubt that they will have much of a problem with it, but like you said, check with the doc first.

I took Chantix in the beginning of this year. I actually quit smoking for 3 months. I was only on it for a month. Then, I let a "friend" stay with me for a few week who smoked. All bets were off after that and I was smoking again.

I had lower back and neck surgeries this summer. I was still smoking during the lower back surgery (got my PV in the mail the day after my surgery). The second surgery, I was analog free. I told the hospital during my admissions paperwork that I vaped. I did not however ask if I could vape, I just did when I was alone in my room or the bathroom.

I guess you could call the hospital and ask their policy on vaping anonomously. Then you could make your decision based on the outcome. I dont know if I healed any better the second time or not. To be honest, the neck surgery didnt seem to do anything relief wise, but I cant say that its related or not.
