Another low cost intro to high voltage, although not variable, is a classic dumb pass-through, one without a regulator or inline battery. A 5V 808 pass-through runs about $10 - $12. Add a 2A USB power supply (for example the Walmart IQ dual 2A USB supply, sold online for $10, free S&H if you have them deliver to your closest Walmart), under $25 total, lets you test 5V. I used one at work, and another in my car (they make 2A cig lighter USB supplies, also around $10) for many months. They would work fine with your 808 cartos -- 3 ohms is nice, and 2.5 ohms OK, though a bit too hot for my taste -- will definitely have more kick.

If I can make a suggestion:
Find out what you like first ...... then invest in a nice mod.

Variable Voltage Box Mod
$35 is a bunch easier to toss in the trash than $85-$150 or more.

Thanks, TJ. I bookmarked that link for later exploration. Even with a screwdriver adjustment from 0-7v, it's an effective way to enter the VV world for low bucks.

I like the GLV2... Variable voltage at a reasonable price, but does it work best with attys or cartomizers? I'm seriously considering this one

It's a power source. It doesn't care whether you're using attys or cartos. It's not, however, a variable voltage device. For $11 less than you're considering spending on it, you could get an Infinity Pro, a true VV mod (although you'd have to wait a few days before it's released): IPro

Or you could spend a touch more and get a Buzz Pro, recently marked down to $129: Buzz Pro

The MadVapes VV box mod mentioned before is great for the price, but good luck finding them in stock.

I just ordered the Madvapes variable voltage mod for $35. They had 6 in stock (5 now). Yesterday, they were out. I had to order 14500 batteries from another source. Awesome vapor had protected ultra-fire 14500s for $5.00 each and a dual charger for $14. I needed some juice anyway, so that was a natural since they had the batteries.
