Question about 18650 batteries

I was given a free 18650 battery from a friend, and the plastic on the outside is starting to rip open and such from being in my pocket all of the time. After getting annoyed and ripping the plastic off, I was made aware that you actually need the plastic to keep your battery from firing on its own. Is there something I can do to continue using this battery? maybe just wrapping it in tape or something? I know pretty much any option is going to look very ghetto but it keeps me from having to buy a new one :)

I hope you saved the plastic piece at the positive contact of the battery. Without it, you're SOL. I believe BatteryJunction has 18650 heat wraps that you literally just slide on and blow dry until it's tight on the battery.

Edit: The shrink wraps are everywhere. Just do a google search for '18650 Shrink Wraps'

Heya mate. As you learned, that sleeve is there to isolate the battery so you don't get a short.

1. Please consider getting a $0.50-$1 plastic battery case. This isn't a duracel that'll come into contact with some coins and get a bit warm and maybe leak some battery acid.

2. Here's a tutorial on rewrapping your batteries:

3. Here's two recent posts where this has come up -- one guy having to toss his battery onto the lawn due to ignoring the wrap, and another whose mod ended up blowing up after he chucked it into an alley:
