Just cuz an LED has a forward voltage of 5V does not mean you can run it naked on a mod. For one thing it will be way too bright. And the resistor does more than just limit volts it also limits the current, these things usually want about 30mA tops.

I hear ya Willy, but that particular led worked fine on a few mods I have built without a current limiting resistor, which is why I suggested it. Theory is great, but in this case practical experience is speaking.
Well, it becomes unrepairable, that seems to be an issue. I've never used JB weld to strengthen my soldering connections, and you shouldn't need to either. Just solder correctly and you'll be good to go.
