Question about rebuilding with SS mesh

I just reviewed a tutorial about rebuilding an EVOD using stainless steel mesh as the wick. It suggested checking the finished wicking/coiling for shorts. Why doesn't the SS mesh act as a short across the coil it is touching? Is SS an insulator? Why doesn't the resistance change due to the mesh across the leads?

Where do you all buy your mesh?

if you going to use mesh only, you'll need to oxidize the mesh first. ive been experimenting with mesh inside 1mm Ekowool. Others have also wrapped cotton or silica around the mesh first.
