Welcome to ecf! This is a great info source.
Pretty much it's the closest you'll come to a real cigarette. Drawback is the battery life. I was a PAD+ smoker and they lasted about 1 1/2 hr for me. I think electro nix stix has the 510 kit that has cartomizers rather then the other. This was my first. Didn't last long with me. Definately buy extra batteries. Move on from there but it's a really good start. Worked for me!
Good luck!!

Hi and welcome to ECF.

The 510's are small, about the size of a 100 length cigarette. As Jupiter says, the battery life is not very good. I used mine for about a month before I got tired of being chained to my battery charger.

There are cartridges available in both round and what they call whistle tip. Most kits come with the round so if you prefer the flat whistle tips just order a box of them for around $3 at the same time.

If you look around you can find round tips for the 510. I just received my 510 from MadVapes and had ordered both flat tips and round tips for it. The tips (or carts) are easily removable, for refilling or replacing. The 510 is a bit longer than a regular cigarette. The main thing that I've had to get used to with ecigs (I started out with a 21st Century ecig bought at a local cig shop) is the weight; you can't easily hold the ecigs with your lips, it's really a 'hands on' thing :).

Many 510 users get tired of the lack of battery life and move "up" to the eGo or Riva because all of the 510 equipment (carts, cartomizers, and atomizers) fits on the eGo or Riva battery. The eGo/Riva batteries are bigger (cigar sized instead of cigarette sized) and they last a LOT longer (around 5 hours versus the 1-2 hours on the regular 510.) That's a logical next step because you still get the feel of the 510, just with a lot more battery power. You can get a Riva kit at E-Liquid and Electronic Cigarette Shop - Category Listings for under $30. Make sure you hit the 20% off button on the top left corner of their home page. Then go to 510 Riva and find the "lite bundle" which comes with two full kits. It's the best deal going right now. Hope they still have some.

I like the 510. It's not "be all and end all" by itself, but it is the basis for a lot variations that have come since it's inception. And 510 atomizer is the gold standard which others are compared.
OK, that being said, if you're not sure about e-cigs just yet, and if you want to start with one, it's a great choice because if you do like it, you can upgrade in the future.

The first upgrade you might want after you decide that the 510 is a good rig is a PCC. It basically looks like a metal cigarette pack that can hold and charge an extra battery plus a couple of extra cartridges. It can usually recharge your batteries 3 to 4 times before needing to be recharged itself.
(I use them when I don't want to pack a "man-purse" full of supplies around with me, and I know I won't be gone from home more than 3-4 hours.

The next upgrade you might want to try is either an eGo or Riva 510 system. They can still use the 510 atomizers and carts, but have a larger battery about the girth of a mini-mag flashlight. They can give you anywhere between 5 to 10 hours of vaping between charges. At this point, they don't really look or feel like a regular cigarette, but they do the job very well. (You can get a PCC for them too, but now you're looking at something about the size of small diary or personal planner.)

And every day, something new is being added to the arsenal like Mega cartridges, Tank systems, and who knows what tomorrow...

I tend to use them all for various times and places.

But if this is your first, you can't really go wrong with an original Joye 510. It's a cheap, reliable entry into vaping, and as I said before, if you like it - great. If not, you aren't out a lot of money.

Oh, and as to your original question about round or "fluted tips?

I buy a lot of my equipment from CigNot.com. A basic 510 set of 2 batteries, 2 atomizers, charger and 5 carts runs for 35.00 even. You can choose whether you want flat or round carts simply by asking for them in the comments section during checkout. (And no, I don't work for CigNot, I'm just a very satisfied customer.)

I hope that helped, and didn't muddy the waters.

And good luck!

Cskent,

You say that you got tired of it after about a month. What are you actually using now?

I have been watching Youtube video reviews and I'm concerned about the battery life issue.

Thanks :)

When I upgraded from the 510 I went to Mega eGo's. I bought a starter kit with 2 batteries and used it for about a month and liked it. I ordered a few more batteries for it, but on a whim decided to try a cheaper big battery mod. I ordered a Madvapes Maxi Roughstack, a couple of batteries, and a charger. It was great compared to the eGo's, I've still got 3 brand new 900mah eGo batteries still in their wrapper. I liked the Roughstack, but wanted something that was finished a little nicer so I got a Silver Bullet by Altsmoke. It uses the same batteries as the Roughstack and they'll last for 2 days on a charge if I need to let it go that long, they're 2600mah.

By comparison the standard 510 batteries are 180mah and I was charging them every 2 hours or so. If I hadn't had 3 batteries and 2 chargers there's just no way it would have kept up with me. The Mega eGo batteries are 900mah and lasted around 12 hours on a charge and they are good. But they run at 3.2 volts, as do the 510's, while the Roughstack and Silver Bullet run at over 4 volts when freshly charged, and I usually only run them down to around 3.8 to 3.7 volts before recharging. So what this translates to is a bigger hit. Couple the higher voltage with a 1.5 ohm LR atty and you've got a fog machine that'll run all day. Plus they have the option of running at 6 volts if you so choose.

Ok, probably way too much information, but you asked.
