Unprotected batteries have a small internal circuit that prevents them from over charging and completely discharging. The charger that comes with the unit shuts off to prevent over charging, and the button on my woo starts flashing and the unit stops operating when the batteries get low. Otherwise they are the cr123 3.7V (not cr123a 6v) and protected batteries are not hard to find (common in cameras)

I should add to the battery thing......these batteries ARE vented, and ARE equipped with a thermal fuse, the protection they lack is the circuit that does not allow them to overcharge (which kills the battery) or discharge completely (which kills the battery). So as long as you don't use these batteries in a flashlight, or charge them on a charger that does not shut off when they reach 4.2v you're cool.
