Well, my baby just ordered my Christmas present. My LP Coppervein grand will soon be in the mail. I wanted to order it early enough to be able to get it clear coated before it gets wrapped and put under the tree. My question is, what is the best, economical way to protect the finish. I've heard talk about auto clear coat. I don't have a clue as to how much it would cost to get that done, but I'm going to guess EXPENSIVE. I don't want to go cheap enough that it's going to end up being pointless, but I don't want to spend a fortune on it either. I know the innovative minds in Reoville have come up with some economical ways to protect their grands. Could some of you please share?

I used rustoleum clear enamel spray. Cost me 8 bucks with free shipping from Amazon. Works amazing and my copper vein still looks like how it did months ago

Kiwi, that REO looks AWESOME!!!! I wanted to buy the coppervein when I bought my first one, and again when I bought my second one lol, but the thought of having to do something to it scared me. I'm not the most handy person, and don't want to mess it up. But now that I have two others, and blessed enough to be able to add a third, I'm getting the one I really wanted all along. I hadn't thought about using any kind of coating on an atty. Another question. If you clear coated a brass or copper atty, would it keep it from tarnishing? I ordered a brass button cover, and wanting to go with a brass atty. I know from having the copper AFC on my magma that they are a PITA to keep shiny and new looking

My Copper Vein is exactly 3 months old today. I used the Rustoleum Clear Enamel Spray on it as well. I applied 2 coats on it the day I got it and have NOT noticed any color changes. Recommend using the Rustoleum on any Reo Grand to protect the finish. It works great.

But however, I strongly recommend a well thought out plan BEFORE attempting to spray coat your Reo. Humidity and weather can have an affect on how well the coating takes. And LINT is something you want to avoid as well. HERE is a link to some tips and notes.

Here's my Copper Vein.

ALL BRASS will Patina over time. Brass protects itself from environments by going through the Patina process. There are tips and tricks to cleaning Brass, and then coating it. You should call EverBrite tomorrow (800-304-0566) and talk to someone. They make a product called ProtectaClear. I hear that stuff is really good at coating and protecting Brass. They have a kit available that will clean the Brass, and then coat it with Protectaclear

I have not used the ProtectaClear enamel, but I do use the Maas cleaner that comes with the kit. But you can get a 2oz tube of Maas at Ace Hardware for about $5.00. LINK HERE.

Stacy1:
The Brass RM2 and Brass Button Cover looks awesome when it's shiny. But you should know that Button Cover WILL Patina and look nasty from the oils from your thumb. This is Temporary though. It is not permanent. You can clean it with Brasso, or Maas to get it looking like sparkling 24k Gold again. But after awhile, it will patina again and look blackish.

I cleaned my Brass Button Cover with Maas. Then, dipped it in hot water and baking soda to neutralize any oils from my skin. (Google cleaning Brass) You cannot touch the Brass BEFORE coating it. Fingerprints will show through the Clear Enamel. I put on gloves to handle the Button Cover to keep from getting fingerprints on it, and then sprayed it with the same Rustoleum I used on my Copper Vein. So far, it's worked great.

BUT HOWEVER, I wish I had just purchased the kit from EverBrite.

Hehe I bought my clear coat before I even ordered my copper vein :p

I'm pretty sure using the clear enamel will protect against tarnishing. Buuuuuut. There's a strong smell that stays there for quite a while, so I wouldn't use it on an atty. The button will be fine though, although personally I think the tarnished brass button marches the copper vein better. :p

Do bear in mean these coatings will wear off eventually. Personally I got pretty obsessive about reapplying coats and do it once every 3 weeks or so. In fact I've dropped mine a few times and the only thing that chips off is the enamel coating now haha

HOLY S**T! You have to recoat them once a month! I wouldn't have ordered it if I knew it was that much trouble keeping it looking good. I thought it was once and done. Maybe once a year, but once a MONTH:facepalm:

What is the everbright kit Ed101z?

HUH. No no no hahaja that's just me being and idiot. Somehow along the way I ended up being obsessive about it and just kinda kept doing it.

Then again I don't really know how long the coats last.

Kiwi, I don't know what Rustoleum you used, but I have to disagree with the statement about it wearing off after a couple of weeks. I used this Rustoleum (HERE), and it's very durable. If that there were the case, my Copper Vein would look black by now. I wipe my Reo off with a soapy wash rag every other day. It gets a little soapy, and then I rinse the wash rag with hot water, and wipe it off. Then dry it with a towel. It would be completely black by now IF the Rustoleum was failing at protecting it. It still looks shiny, and you can tell it has a protective coating on it. I see no signs at all that the clear coat is thinning, or wearing off.

Stacy,
EverBrite is a company that makes ProtectaClear. (HERE). The Kit I was referring to is HERE.. I would call the company tomorrow and inquire about their products. I have 2 Brass RM2's, and plan on getting the ProtectaClear to put on them. I'll probably get the spray can which is HERE.

Until I get around to getting the ProtectaClear, I use the Maas cleaner to clean and shine my Brass RM2's. You can get a the same 2oz tube of Maas from Ace Hardware that is included in the EveryBrite kit.

Hahahahah I feel like I'm terrible at communication :(

I used the same coating as you did. But I meant to say that the enamel coating will eventually wear off. I have absolutely no idea how long it takes, could be many many months , but I personally do it every few weeks just because I got obsessive with it haha. That's just me is all I'm saying

...you could try the spray can version of ProtectaClear. I'm going to order a can of it one of these days. Yeah, it's expensive, but I hear it's very durable and can withstand high temperatures - which would be perfect for the Brass RM2 and Brass Button Cover.

With that said, I do have to point out that I've not had any problems with the Rustoleum enamel at all. It's works great, and was easy to apply. I just want the very best product money can buy for my Reo, and bet the EverBrite products are the way to go.

Here's what you don't do. I waited a few months before I clear coated and sure do regret it. She's starting to look older (like me) but I still love her anyway. View attachment 387678

Agree with that. Here's how I bought my my very first Reo, a used Mini CV that had not been protected. The seller made it clear it had a dark patina same as the silver vein Mini also being sold. I just assumed I could restore it to it's former glory same as I do on some of my other mods that patina, and was wrong. The price paid for being new to Reos and not asking anybody. So it's my dirt black Mini for now. I am thinking of stripping it back to aluminum and LP'ing it. Supposedly it'll have a TRA finish under it (my favorite), and if not then a brushed finish it will be.

The patina on my brass RM2's, Woodvil cups, brass button and brass base pyrex drip tips I have just left with the patina. I could restore them with my Cape Cod Cloth's, but I don't mind them the way they are since they match each other pretty good.
