Bottom line, he has to want to quit. If he doesn't want to quit, then he won't.
I was a lot like him, in that what I wanted was something that looked, and tasted, and felt just like a cigarette. I think that's common with smokers making the switch. But you can't get that. None of the flavors taste like a real cig, because to get that flavor, you have to burn things. If you keep it small enough to look like a cig, you have a tiny battery and hardly any juice, and even then, it's much heavier than a cig.
If he goes into it thinking "It'll be just like smoking", he'll probably be disappointed.
It took me awhile to make the switch. I cut my cigs down to 1/2 what I'd smoked before right away, and moved down to 6-10 cigs a day fairly easy, but getting rid of the last of them was harder. For me, the thing that worked was a higher level of nicotine. I'd been using 24nic, but sometimes, that wasn't enough. Especially after meals, I'd want a real cig. Eventually I got some 30nic juice, and that got me off the last of the cigs right away. Later, I cut back on the nic, but at first, just getting off the cigs is the main thing.
It worked well for me, and for some of my friends, but I've also had friends try it who never really converted and still smoke. I think it really comes down to "Does this person really want to quit".
