I'm pretty sure but I'm still digging. I'll check out Orb. I'm disappointed that vendors sell or even prepackage these unprotected batteries and say to specifically use them when nobody recommends them for safety reasons. They should at least say that these are unprotected batteries and to use at your own risk.

I haven't seen a vendor selling unprotected batts with a mod in some time. You sure it's not IMR? It wouldn't need to be protected if it was.

Did you see these words in the Battery Discription? "Safe Chemistry"

Sorry forgot I posted this. This is as much info on the battery that I could find.

Many MOD e cigarette suppliers use low quality Li-ion batteies. These proor quality batteries explode easily, or cause fire and endanger people's safety. Therefore, we strongly recommend to use Authentic Sanyo batteries.

It's definitely Lithium Ion. IMR is LiMn (lithium manganese). Sanyo batteries, as all Japanese cells, are the batteries of choice these days. Sanyo was acquired by Panasonic in 2009, so you'd expect quality from them. They've been around since 1950. I'd stay away from Chinese batteries if I could get Japanese batteries.

A high number of manufacturers are switching to IMR for the safety aspect. You get a little less life from a charge, but far higher safety. Even if an IMR shorts, you get high heat but no explosion and usually no venting at all, from all the failure mode descriptions I've read.

To me, safety is an important factor with something that I'm using in front of my face and carrying in my pocket. No rockets in my pocket if I can help it.

i had a protected batt go bad on me. 2 actually. nothing bad happened, it just read 0.00v on the meter. i didnt notice any gasses escaping, and there certainly was no explosion. not even any heat. did i get lucky?

The protection circuit probably died, if you remove it, you´ll have a working unprotected battery. You can just peel off the plastic and remove the circuit, just don´t use it in your PV.

Sanyo 18650 2600mah Li-Ion Battery

Ain't these atleast the ones produced since panasonic aquired Sanyo LiMn batteries? Since i got 2 red ones with my lavatube kit and they are a shade or three darker in the shrinkwrap and have a red ring around the +nipple instead of a green one i have on the harvested ones from laptop batteries. iam gonna see if i can post an image or two of a comparison. My vendor claims thay are safe for use in mechmods like the gg and unregulated mods like the bolt.

The left one is one of the ones i got with my Lavatube

That video says nothing about how well they handle a short other than neither one had a catastrophic failure. +1 point for each.

The temperature behaved exactly as what should be expected when shorting batteries of completely different specifications. AW 1600 is capable of safely delivering 24 amps in normal usage, the Panny is capable of safely delivering 10 amps. The exactly current delivered during a short is unknown, but it is very safe to assume that the AW's is much higher. Higher amps = more heat.

The video is nothing more than creative marketing by a guy that is trying to sell more batteries. Both batteries are extremely good performers with an excellent record. That is all.

For the Sanyo's....best ICR on the market for our uses. Don't be fooled by the 2900/3100/3400mAh cells. The Sanyo 2600mAh will put them to shame in a single cell mod. But I would not recommend them in a single cell VV device due to the amp load required for them. Unprotected......forget about it.

yeah they both handled it well I wasn't saying they didn't..the temperature difference and the hole in the wrapper on the AW for me is not handling the short as well as the panasonic..both batteries are great..the panasonics are just what I use..easier to get for me and less expensive..

Seems there are protected and unprotected versions of the UR18650FM, or some disinformation.

Panasonic does not list a rechargeable manganese battery here nor here with specs. There is a UR18650F but no FM here. M for manganese?

I'm done searching for the day :)

Once I understand this, I want to find a site that sells both the Joye EGO-T 18650 MOD and the battery, and that doesn't try to charge $28 for the battery, and ships from US, and, preferably, has paypal.

Grapevine talk sourced from a Panny rep has it that Panasonic is dropping the CGR/CH designator and now calling it UR18650A. It is supposedly becoming a Panasonic/Sanyo (Panasonic aquired Sanyo some years ago) partnered battery, hence the new designation that is more inline with both companies naming conventions. I doubt that the vendors will be calling it anything other than CGR/CH for a good while since it is now a staple in the lithium powered community.

Mooler,
The protected versions have had the protection chip added by the wholesaler. None of the battery manufactures make protected batteries, only the raw cells. The wholesaler adds the protection circuits and "fancy" wrappers before they are sent to the vendors.

"M" in the name doesn't nessisarily stand for manganese. The UR18650FM is an ICR (Cobalt), not an IMR (Manganese). Hence the need for a protection circuit.

Intl-Outdoor does drop ship from China, but it is free shipping with reasonable shipping times. I was very pleased with them when I ordered my Sanyo's.

Another option that might open up a few sources is the Xtar 18700 2600mAh. It is just Xtar's wrapper and protection circuit with a Sanyo UR18650FM inside. Although, I do like the Intl-outdoor batteries more than the Xtar's. From the tests that I've seen, it looks like Intl-Outdoor uses a better, less parasitic, protection circuit.
