I'm looking to buy some wick and naturally I checked fleabay first. I see that there is a difference from fiberglass and silica wicks except that silicon is still fiberglass. Dangers of fiberglass etc. I've read about.
Is there anything particular I need to look for buying wick for the first time? They have braided wick, twisted, and several sizes labeled silicon fiber.
I just finished a youtube vid on how to rebuild a kanger atty and it shows eveything quite clearly but I noticed that after he wrapped the 2mm wick he put 2 strands of 1mm side by side over top the coils before locking it together. Whats the benefit of this? Imagining more surface contact and possibly better vapor production but can you still dry burn to clean em off? Or should I just go for 3mm wick if I dont want to rebuild them every time it needs cleaning.

There are two reasons for those 1mm wicks. First they are called "flavor" wicks, allowing more juice to get to the coil. Second, they help prevent flooding. I haven't used pro tanks in quite a while, but my wife just bought a couple of them. So, guess I'll be rebuilding them when needed. The main issue people have had with them is burning juice when turning up the voltage. I used to always build them with one 2mm for the coil and one 2mm for the flavor wick and I would get better results.

As far as the type of wick? Yes, silica is fiberglass and can lose particles. Just make sure you blow it clean. If it frays to much, redo it. But before you use it, boil it for 20 minutes and torch it once dry.

Cotton all the way baby! Silica is a little tricky to work without fraying it. Cheese cloth strands get used a lot, the butchers twine has been getting some good results (I haven't tried it yet personally), "Peaches and Cream" cotton yarn has quite the following as well. I love the plain 'ole cotton balls (organic) for ease and CHEAPNESS! One bag is basically a lifetime supply for a couple dollars, easy to dole out and shape, threads without any hassle and TASTES GREAT! Give it a try...

Oh, and I skip the flavor wicks these days, but that's just preference. Get some experience with just how much cotton to use, and there is no flooding issues and the cotton is plenty absorbent enough to mitigate the flavor wick.

Hey there flybykite,
I have been using a high quality 3 mm silica wick. Have been looking at trying the high quality Ekowool silica wick.
Found that a "thinner" (70/30 PG/VG) juice, a couple of the "flavor" wicks on top, tend to discourage gurgling and leaking, and allow more wicking.
The "thicker" (50/50 PG/VG and up) juice does not appear to need the flavor wicks.
Just re-coiled/wicked 8 Kanger Evod BCC cartos with 3mm silica (all at 1.8 ohms), half for thin juice,
half for my thicker juice.
So for no gurgles/leaks (knock on wood)...:vapor:

Cotton. It's the ONLY way to fly!

Try some yourself. Grab a Q-tip, pull the cotton off an end, roll it into a wick (you get the feel for how thick to straddle the fine line between too fat/poor juice flow and too skinny/leakage), and put it in. You'll notice the difference. Healthier, too.
So what is the optimal size roughly? Same as a glass wick 3 mm?
Gotta get some wire first.

I get my Kanthal wire from Lightning Vapes (they also sell on Ebay).... 30ga 100' for like $5. I use Sugar & Cream 100% cotton yarn - I think it holds better flavor over Peaches & Cream.

Micro-coil, 30ga using 10 wraps (10 on top, 9 on bottom) around a 1/16" drill bit will put you at 2.0 ohms +/- .1
The cotton is 4-strand, I pull 1 strand out.....use 3 inside the coil and still use 2 single strands as flavor wicks.
I only do this because the wife and I prefer higher PG juices....we've never had a leak nor a dry hit if you allow the juice to fully saturate the cotton.

Once the wick goes bad or you want to change flavors, pull out carefully...dry burn the coil ONLY (cotton will burn if dry) to get the residual juice off. Then ...rewick with more cotton. FYI, I do boil the cotton for 20 minutes to get any of the crap off as it is handled in the store and who knows what's it has been through. Let it air dry before use inside a coil. Also...using cottin, make sure to wash hands before use.

Cotton is the way to go.....taste is so much better than silica and is cheaper to rewick.
