Hey, REOville.

I just want to make sure I have this right before I order wire.....

My wife runs a Mini with an RM2 and microcoils are not working out the best for her since she fails to squonk adequately enough and often burns her CVS cotton wick. then, she has to try to re-wick at work, which can be difficult.

I want to get her running a coil like I do, which is 28 gauge Kanthal wrapped on a Q-Tip shaft and wicked with 3mm ReadyxWick.

I want to keep her ohm range around .8-1.0 and at the diameter I am wrapping, I don't think 28 gauge is the right wire for her. I'd like to keep it to 6-8 wraps rather than more because I don't want the heat up time to take forever.

Can anyone recommend a wire gauge that might work for this application?

Thanks much.

OK, so it looks like a Q-Tip is around 11/64" in diameter.

Of course, the Google Docs sheet doesn't go up that fat in diameter though. :)

I think I will have to wrap an 6 wrap coil for her using the 28 gauge and then see what the resistance is, then decide on a wire gauge that would likely keep that 6 wrap coil at about an ohm.

I've been using second smallest rod on the coil gizmo (slightly larger than 1/16") with 2mm Rxw, with great results.

I haven't tried the 3mm yet, but I actually have been waiting on getting the right size rod to wrap it on: 2.5mm.

A generous fellow (Mark D) sent me more then a few 2.5mm rods (to use in a pin vise)... apparently the optimal diameter for the 3mm rxw... if you want a rod PM me......I will be doing 28g 7/8 wrap for around 1 ohm, when I get around to it...

I do 4 wraps of 28ga around a 2.5mm machine screw for about .6Ω....5 wraps will get about .9Ω (depending on the atty used).

You get perfectly spaced little spirals (coils not touching). They don't get gunked nearly as fast as tightly wrapped micros and VTF is just as good, IMO. 28ga is sturdy enough to not pinch/force the coils together when inserting wicking material.

These easily fit into small chambered attys. I use single coils in cyclone, hornet and ERA on most excellent mods....REOs. YUMMY!:)

Thanks, guys.

Rudy, you're getting to the heart of my little problem here.

If you say that 7/64" works for you with the 3mm RXW, then that has to be similar to the diameter of a Q-Tip. Now, I just need to figure out which wire gauge and how many wraps tp get around .8-1.0 ohm.

If your qtip is = 2.5mm then 8 wraps of 28g will give you 1.54 ohms
7/64" = 2.77mm @ 8 wraps gives you 1.7 ohms.
You might want to look at 29g wire to give you a 6 wrap right about at your target range? I use 29g 7/8 wraps for my lady and comes out to about 1.2 ohms.
I have a spool of 29 guage if you want to try some I can send you a foot. PM your address if interested.
Again, get her to switch and get rid of cotton. :)
