Hey, I know there are some people who use Ni-MH batteries on mods, and when I was in RS today I found (and had to pick up) a 15 min charger with 4 AA and 4 AAA batteries on clearance for $19.67 before tax. Not sure if this is going on at other locations, but it might be worth a look. It is an enercell kit and the AAA are 850mAh and the AA are 2500mAh. The charger can be used in a car or on the wall, and the charger even had a built in USB port on it. Heck, 4 of either of the batteries was almost as much as the package!

For $20, I'd go with Sanyo Eneloop + charger.

They have decent discharge curves as well:
