When I first started rebuilding, I began with an AGA T2. I spent hours trying to get it set up right with no luck. I picked up an RSST and again could not get the stainless steel mesh wick right.

I took a risk and bought an Ithaka clone and a Kayfun Lite. The Kayfun Lite was the first RBA that I successfully built. Once I got that going, I made my way into attempting to build the Ithaka clone and what do you know, after 4 practice builds and some advice from here, I got it working within a few days. I also built an igo w, but it doesn't really get much use.

As someone that is new to RBAs, I would recommend a VV/VW mod that will tell you the resistance of your atomizer. You have to read the ohms before you fire any coil you build, so that is a convenient feature to have. The safety features on them also make things much safer for people that are new. There are a ton of them out there. I have a Vamo and a sigelei zmax. I think the Zmax is a better built device, but you can buy a vamo for less money. You can also look at the Provari, Evic, or SVD. There are many more.

Ok so you think a kayfun lite would be a good place to start? I am using a Zmax at the moment :)

I think it is probably the easiest tank RBA to start with. Something like an Igo l or w is easier to build, but they are dripping atomizers.

When I started rebuilding, I absolutely did not want a dripper because dripping is too messy for me. If you like or are curious about drip peers, a good place to start would be the igo L/W.

My point was more that genesis style atomizers are a total PITA. You should stick to ones that are meant to be used with silica. While I love my Kayfun, it is kind of a gamble to spend that much on your first RBA.

right now the choices are far better then when i started, I think for a genesis a richman or rsst.
for dripping just about any of the well known ones. Igo, phoenix, V5, cyclone copies, octopus.
and for tank styles you have the ithaka and penelope clones. soon the russian should be around as well
the kayfun is no harder to set up then a standard dripper with just a few extra steps thrown in when assembling them.

with the abundant number of choices today it really comes down to what style of RBA do you want to start with.

as for the mod? my god theres no shortage of good ones, clones included. a year and a half ago there was a stack of ones i couldnt afford and 3 clones. just poking around this subforum will show you plenty of posts on clones to choose from. the good, bad, flaws, tips, tricks. so that all comes down to the features you want and cost.

I like my RSST now. When I first got it, I tried it with 400 SS and 32 Kanthal A1. Either I could not get my coils right, wrapped too tight, too loose, not spaced right, etc. or the SS mesh was rolled too tight, too loose, not folded right, etc. I pretorched the mesh, I pretorched the wire, etc. One or two hits and then a burning taste. I could see that the wick was not wicking juice well.

So I took 3mm silica wick, doubled it over and pulled it through the wick hole. I left the bottom of the wick long enough to lay on the bottom of the tank. Wrapped the wick 5 times, leaving out the center post, as it made it easier to wrap. Tested it on my meter, and it came out 2.6 ohms. I took one wrap off one wrap, making it 4 wraps, and it came out 1.95ohms. Filled the tank, primed the wick on top, and hit the switch. No burned taste period.

Without the top on, I would hit the button, and watch the smoke. Let off the switch, and you could see the wick, wicking the juice and getting wet again.

I will never try SS mesh again. Too much trouble.

Took me 10 minutes the first time. And I obviously have no idea on how to build an atomizer.
