Part 2 - Installing the Coil

Dry burning is hitting the power button for a few seconds until the coil glows bright red, then releasing it to cool, and doing it again three or four times. I should have taken a photo of that. Works great for getting caked on juice off a dirty coil by turning it to ash that can be blown/rinsed away. Cotton wicks should be removed before dry burning and as you will see in Part 3, they are easily replaced without removing the coil. You don't have to replace the coil everytime your wick burns or the coil cakes up.

Thanks for the tutorial.:)
It was a mystery to me before but that doesn't look so hard.

I actually thought of you when I decided to make the photo tutorial. It is really easy. Hardest part is step 10, getting the wire tails through the holes. You can make longer tails to make it even easier to see.

Good job!! Even I may try it. I have the RG but was wondering how easy is it to get your desired resistance (want 1.7-8) on the coil. I guess if I had VV then it wouldn't be so critical. Also, whats the desired length of wick leaving the post? Good info, thanks

Thanks. I don't really meter my coils anymore because they are pretty consistent.

See this sticky

and particularly the charts in this (1st post) http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...ance-wire-kanthal-nichrome-4.html#post6840057 and this (post #52) http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...ance-wire-kanthal-nichrome-2.html#post7264406

If you get the wire gauge and length right, the resistance works out almost perfect no matter how you wrap it. The wrapping style determines flavor, how fast is gunks up with some juices, type of wick, and space available in your rebuildable to put it.

As I went to rebuild my coil today, I decided to photograph it for those that can't or don't like to watch videos.

The tutorial is in four parts.

Part 1 - Making the Coil

Thank you. You make it look so easy that I may even have to try it out. Would you let me know what you use for wire and wick?

Thank you!

I'm still kind of a noob with this stuff. So far for wire I just used the wire Rob sells in 28, 30, and 32, Kanthal A1. I change the length a bit depending on the gauge. I'll probably just buy 30 in the future.

For wick I am using cotton embroidery thread/yarn I bought at Michaels. It's cheap, comes in natural or ecru, and I boil it before I use it for wicks. DMC, #5 perle embroidery thread - 100% cotton, made in France. The other is slightly thicker for slightly bigger coils- Patons #3 natural 100% cotton yarn, manufactured in Canada, made in Turkey.

I tried hemp also bought at Michael's in the bead department, but it tasted a little too woodsy for me. It wicked really well though and was stronger than cotton. I may try it again with tobaccos.

One thing I have learned with cotton is that you don't want the wick too tight in your coils or it burns. If it is relatively loose it wicks better.

Many people more knowledgeable and threads about wire and wick choices, so please do a search. Some people are even using silver wire now.

I've always used cartos on my REOs, but your video was so clear on how to build the wick/coil for an RBA, I may have to try one. Thanks!!!

Yay Jeni! Go for it! You really won't regret it! Especially when you taste the difference !It's so worth the learning curve!

Actually, I find myself messin around trying out different ways to make the coils and trying different type wicking material just cuz it's fun now, lol.
