Good evening Reonauts! I've been using this technique to make tight, twist-free microcoils for my REO and have been very happy with the results and wanted to share. Sorry for the lack of focus but you should get the idea.

RBA Tight Microcoil - YouTube

I'm sure I'm not the only one doing it this way but I hadn't seen it before trying it myself, hopefully it helps somebody.:toast::vapor:

Here's a bonus video!

i haven't figured how to avoid the outtake. my first spool was 28awg and it's now a total rats-nest in one of my desk drawers. i just open the drawer, snip off a piece and wrap. i can never see the "end" so i just make 2 cuts to get a piece. by now, i prolly have 50 "ends".

i'm afraid to open my other gauges cuz i'm outta drawers...

I just came up with this last night after messing up my spool of 29.

I cut a piece out of an rectangular pencil eraser section that's slightly wider than the flanges of the spool and jam it down between them.

Works like magic and you just slide it around to allow yourself to take out wire.

Good bye "outtakes" and notching the side of the spool and hello infinite flexibility :)

Yes, the cut job is bad and yes, my kids have done what I used to do and stabbed the original chunk with their pencils :)

I pull the wire end through a small hole on the spool to keep it from unwinding itself when I'm not using it. When wrapping a coil with it on the spool, once you've got a hold of the loose end, wrap in the direction which keeps tension on the spool - unwinding and bending backwards.

I've had my wire spool spring like that already, but after I'm done winding it up I've been using this to wind my coils without slipping the wire through my fingers.

Its a little wire twister I Picked up at the local craft store and ground the handle off so it doesn't get in the way while I'm wrapping the coil. I cut a piece of wire off the spool and then I synch the wire between the washers (pointed out in the pic) and hold the sleeve on the twister while I'm wrapping the coil. The wire doesn't twist while I'm wrapping the coil and combined with the DZ coil jig I barely even have to anneal it once installed.

Here's a link to at least one place you can buy this little gem on line:
Amazon.com: Beadalon 5 Hole Wire Twister, 2-Piece: Arts, Crafts & Sewing
And here:
WIRE TWISTER BY COLOURCRAFT

Here's the whole kit:
