I think I am getting close to building my own coils. How long do the last as compared to store-bought coils?
Generally speaking... Kanthal wire coils of larger gauge will last longer than those of thinner gauge. There is simply more material to decay over time before the resistance value goes up, and/or the thermally conductive, electrically resistive aluminum oxide coating (alumina) diminishes - to the point where some can taste the iron/chromium content.

So, taking that into account, RBAs (RDAs, Gennys and RTAs) that utilize thicker gauge wire may be able to run on the same coil for, as supertrunker says, "months at a time".
Not saying that you must buy and use nothing but 24 gauge wire, but certainly 26~28 gauge (my personal favorites) will last longer than 30~34 gauge.

As you fit your own wick as well, using cotton wick as an example - you may replace a wick every few days or a week... using the same coil over and over and over and over and.......

I've only been rebuilding Kanger tank coils for 3 weeks, so I can't answer to longevity, but I can opine on quality. They are SOOOOOOOOOO much better that the stockers. Cotton is such an improvement as a wicking material, it's like 100 times better than that nasty old silica. I suggest you use 30ga. kanthal as it's fairly easy to wind and gets you in the ohm range most want to vape at and the amount of vape is really sweet. Use a 1/16 drill bit, or my favorite the Artistic Wire Coiling Gizmo, and wrap some sweet micro coils. Best vape you will have ever had, I guarantee it.

It really depends on the eliquid you're using. One of my RDAs I change the wicking in like every 12ml. But I'm using a darker juice with it so it gunks up a bit. The other is used with a very clear liquid & I've been using the same wick in that one for over a month. I check it to see how it is but it's just not gunked up at all & still in good condition.

I do think with tanks it might be different though since you're saturating the wick in the eliquid constantly. Eventually the wick will break down.

The coils last a good long time though. Mine seem to be averaging around a month before needing a recoil (the one with clear liquid has lasted more like 2 months).
