I agree... solder paste is great if you have a hot air soldering station (and I do), but it is mainly for doing surface mount components (the type that just rest on top of a pcb, and don't go through holes).
Anything that goes through a hole, you are better to use an iron with.

I'm guessing the ZMAX (which many seem to dislike) uses a 0-100% pulse modulation with a low-enough frequency to cause noticeable effects (perhaps <1kHz?).

Fully agree with learning how to solder. Very useful skill to know, and I wouldn't trust the currents that a dna can put out with any type of half a@#ed product that "claims" to be just as good at connecting wire as my iron.
