Here's how I learnt to solder:

Make sure your soldering iron has a thin coating of solder on it. This makes sure it has a good connection to the parts you are heating, like thermal paste on a computer heatsink.

Yes, forgot that, it's a key factor when soldering. The soldering iron must be clean and must have a bit of solder, that way it conducts the heat much much better to the parts.
