Right...

So I just bought a Mini iStick thanks to this thread.

Since you're not supposed to charge your USB thingies on your computer...
How am I supposed to charge this thing?

I actually charge most of my stuff on the computer, and have both charged and used battery-less passthrus on my sony vaio laptop. (That didn't come out right - charged PV's and used passthrus). The laptop was always plugged in, though. For some reason the USB ports seem to be higher-powered than even my somewhat older desktop!

I have seen lots of people saying "Don't charge these on your computer" but I never understood why. A proper USB port should be fine, and recognize if a device is trying to pull to much power (and shut it off if it does). Worst-case it might charge very slowly, if it's a low-powered port.

If I'm wrong about this, I'd love to hear something substantial that says "Don't do it".

DC2, either a wall adapter hooked to that USB cable, or a SEPARATE "powered" USB hub (i.e. not hooked to your computer).

My computer repair guy has a whole shelf of laptops and computers with dead motherboards and blown USB ports due to people charging things on their PCs. He taught me not to do it.

Most of us have many devices (cell phones, bluetooth devices like speakers, vape gear) all needing to be charged, I have a charging station set up on a portion of my kitchen counter with a stand-alone USB port where they all get *fed*.

I highly recommend NOT charging thru your PC. It's sort of the same as telling people not to charge things overnight.....many laugh at that and do it anyway, but stuff happens.

Powered means it gets it charge from something other than your PC, i.e. a wall socket.

We're talking $20-$50 versus $300-$1200 for a computer. :)

On similar subject, using cheapo usb car chargers also a bad idea. They rarely deliver steady and/or proper voltage. And if you get a dud, like I did, it blew the electrical fuses in my truck.

Hey DC2, glad to help, it seems like yesterday you taught me how to use a dripping atomizer way back in 2012. Amazing isn't it? It seemed rather confusing at the time and of course, the gear was pretty different back then.........but it all still works great!!!!

My Ego Twist charger is a USB cable plugged into something that may or may not be called a wall adapter.
And I was pretty sure I could just unplug that and plug the Mini iStick into that same "wall adapter" and it would work.

But everyone always talks about using the correct charger for your batteries so I wasn't sure.
I don't know much about electronic devices, which is absurd given that I minored in physics around 25 years ago.

It is amazing that it is been that long... you're almost an old-timer now!

I've got an egrip I use at work. I added the RBA option to it a few days ago and it went from good to great. For Christmas I gave a new-to-vaping brother of mine an Istick plus Nautilus mini tank. Those two would be my picks over the pen style devices.

The egrip has an RBA option?
