Atty, nobody needs to have a theme! We talked about before. We can have a nice turning party WITHOUT a theme. They just need to be present on PVT at the time of their turning--we provide conversation, flowers, cupcakes, balloons and fireworks.

We've done many threads and parties without a theme before.... A theme is extra (and it's a relatively new addition to our celebrations).

Even I thought avatar parties had to have a theme. 'cuz.... what do you put in the avatar otherwise?

then it's just a turning party?

i dunno, i get the problem....ew want to make things fun and special for the turnee. and sometimes it's difficult for someone to come up with a theme. I guess i'd rather spend the time getting to know a person and helping them choose something special. If they're not up for it then a generic celebration seems like a better default. I do favor adding some options/guidance to the list.

Since y'all can't read my mind, you wouldn't necessarily know that to me accepting the "surprise me" meant either a general welcome celebration theme, and trying to get the person to narrow it down if they spent some time on the thread.

However, if everyone wants to have some back up default themes for those who just can't choose, the list we came up with was pretty good.

Well, if you guys insist on discussing this....

Originally, this is what we asked for (excerpt):

1. welcome thread - entitles the prevet an entry in the monthly contests and the year –end grand prize drawing. Eligible threads will [be] started in the new vets forum prior to turning. The welcome thread request comes through PVT, in the form of 1 post minimum in PVT. Threads must be started prior to turning and cannot be self-started

But apparently we went through the tedious exercise of constructing a complete one-page explanation just to have it all "summarized" into three or so sentences and "simplified" enough to lose almost all meaning.

I'm so outta here for now..............

Yeah, well in this case the "designed by committee" worked. It solved the problem ahead of time. Then it was ignored, summarized, and now we have a whole crew starting their own welcome threads.

I don't care, it just depends on intent of the contest. I'm soooooooo tired of discussing the contest.

(((hugs))) for atty - did we ever get a response to our original proposal???? i rather go with three sentences reflecting our basic rules and having them accepted than staying in limbo.
apparently, those sentences made sense to j0ker who wanted k.i.s.s. and, no matter how you look at it, to have the thread started BEFORE a turning was most important to us. this automatically excludes self-started threads AND allows pvt to be by-passed if somebody so desires.
and contrary to what jj claimed i have not seen even one eligible thread that was started without pvt involvement.

atty, it's not that bad - there have been less than 5 self-started threads so far .....

and i have asked classy to leave those threads unmarked from now on to get away from the negative image of double xx

Looking at 'the big picture', IS there going to be a PVT contest next year? It's gotta be discussed some time (if it hasn't already been). I don't mean to start the discussion NOW; but it sure seems to me to be a very small possibility. So my point in bringing this up - let's limp along on what we have for the next 4 months; I don't see a need for rehashing this at the moment. Of course, I may be missing the 'big picture'; sure wouldn't be the first time :D.

1. Everybody with a welcome thread started in the new vets' welcome forum is eligible for the monthly drawings AND the grand prize drawing at year's end.
I also think this is why there is an increase of new veterans starting their own threads there.
Or did I miss something and this is allowed now ?

Wow...I was only asking for clarification for myself

my only reason for posting the links was to make the point that the rules that we developed (twice) and think we are operating under have never been posted.

Everything else that i want to write is just a rant, and i'd have to come back and delete it. Let's leave it at 'frustrated with the process' and reminding myself regularly that the new vets and not wanting to leave my friends in the lurch are why i stay involved.

a consolidation - i do not think many people work their way through those convoluted faqs ......

and i need to head out or i'll need the pvt team next week to get me through billing ....... sigh

off-topic for atty - i bought a 16 gb thumb drive to try and first back up my data before considering anything else ....

Sorry Classy one. The rant was not directed at you, caused by you, nor is it a bad question. It's just.....the answer is....not well defined.

What if someone (say ... um... John-Doe-Vet starts a welcome thread (ahead of turning) for Bill-Smith-prevet. Not a PVT thing. Do they get into the contest? I don't care if it is yes or no, but I don't know as the rules are. Before, we had a line about making an entry in the PVT for that reason, if I remember correctly since we had this discussion already months ago.

I don't want to make it complicated (actually, it's complicated by itself, we just have to deal with that fact), so I guess I'll leave....for now :p

yes, they do, atty - and i believe that's reflected in jj's faq which she kept changing even though you told her to stop and tweety asked for the same.

i'm stuck at home because i found out quickbooks simple start is no longer available for free. we had bought pro, lost the authorization code when the office manager left 3 yrs ago. i migrated to simple start since i was able to restore the company file.
been on the phone with quickbooks this am and got a special download link. unfortunately, with my connection it'll take over 2 hours to download so i'm stuck here and there is no guarantee it'll work till i get to the installation wizard ... sigh.

snip...

I take it you mean that "they do according to the (current?) summarized rules" then. According to the long version, they had to ask for a welcome thread in PVT. Meh.
