I also am a fan of the AW 1600s. Coming from flashlights there were no hybrid 2000s back then. Out of curiosity I bought 1 AW 2000 to test. While it does seem to have a bit more capacity it doesn't perform as well for SLR. I gave the 2000 away.

Pdibz got me curious about MNKEs so I ordered a pair. Great batteries but I couldn't use them in my Grand. I currently have a button cover on my Grand & with the way I have it set there's not enough throw to make contact with the firing pin. I didn't even bother trying them cause I don't like the idea of the firing pin bending that much. I'll still continue to stick with AW 1600s in my Reos & flashlights. I've never been a fan of flat top batteries & have always avoided them. Only times I use flat tops were for building battery packs which is what they designed for.

So.. question.. considering most of the issues with the button tops stem from previous use in other mods that may have scratched up the surface of the button.. would it be feasible to attempt to weld a button on a flat top battery? Not necessarily DIY style, just wondering if it would even be an option to consider and if so is it possible that an MNKE with a fresh new button on top might hold its own against an AW1600.

Of course it would cost some amount of money to send them away to have buttons welded on them.. just sharing thoughts that aren't fully formed yet, lmao

By the way, my button top Samsung 20Rs (Samsung INR18650-20R 2000 mAh 10C trkis - InTaste) hold up fine, definitely better than my AW 1600s. But those are older than a year, so it's not a fair comparison.
I just switched one 20R out at 3.65V - and I could have gone longer on it - but the coil has only around 1.2 Ohms, not very hard core =)

OK, pdib, buuuut does it slide off and cause a short or did you risk life and limb welding it onto the battery?

i have a problem with some Americanisms - "shortened the footprint" = cut its toes off? Either way i'll give it a spin. What did you make it from?

i'm immortal (so far) so i'll give it a try!

How can a magnet cause a short? if it slides across the battery top - the pin will not hit it and nor will it hit the top of a flat top battery?

i do like (2) pdib, but you sure make better looking coils than battery tops!

It just needs to work itself behind the delrin cover, plenty of ground there - and the firing pin. Because of the finishing, it might even become a time bomb while scratching away on the powder coating. I have used magnets as button tops on the Grand before, but I was very careful to get as many out as I put in =)

Thank you for the explanation, but my battery will not work unless that's on there, because the firing pin will not reach it.

Your 'count them in and count them out' could make you my nomination for surgeon of the year!

i use a grand and worrying about the powder coating is hardly high on my list of priorities since it's battered to death anyway and because of that i like it more!

Probably no so much of a risk in a Reo depending on the magnet size & finish but in flashlights the risk is much greater. Neo magnets are strong but it's not that hard for one to shift. Tube mods are very similar so there's that same level of risk. I personally don't like using magnets either & avoid them as much as possible. I won't even use them for charging but that's just me.
