Ok so here's my typical set up

Reo grand, imr 18650, new RM2, kanthal 28,30g

I bought the rm2 and have had it about a week. So far It's been awesome! (mostly)

During the build a new coil a day and find your sweet spot phase I've run in to a few times where I get this really funky taste from my rm2. The ohms I've been building at varies, as does when I get the funk.

1. I cut off about 5 inches of kanthal 28 or 30.

2. If I'm on the roll, I burn it using a bic lighter. If at home I use my gas stove. I get that sucker cherry red and cool it. I repeat this process two more times.

3. I cut off about 2 inches of wick and grab my eye glass screw driver.

4. I hold the wick against the screw driver folded over to double up and begin wrapping my coil. Wraps change per build as I'm still learning the builds I like. Typically though 4 to 8 wraps with ohms coming out around 1.11 thru 1.8

5. Install the rm2 and do that business until it looks like it will wick great and aesthetically pleasing

6 install on reo and juice it up with the cap off it. I repeat this with out over juicing the bowl and making sure that wick is nice n juicy before I test fire

6 looks legit, test fire, I gets all excited and cap it, vape it like I mean it :)

7. Then comes either awesomeness Or it tastes vaguely similar to the way wet animal fur smells.

Now keep in mind during this whole process I'm still running the same bottle of juice. And the gnarly flavor comes could happen at any ohm, high or low.

Any one have ideas as to why I get random funk from my coil?

Silica has a break in period, which could account for the weird taste. Also, you can torch silica like the wire or "dry burn" it when it's in the coil to help remove things like finger oils or eyeglass gunk (src: I have glasses). This will also allow you to see if you get any hot spots on the coil. Hot spots glow much brighter. You can tweak the coil with your screwdriver to alleviate these. Once the coil glows evenly, juice as per normal and vape like a sir.

Thanks man I will try this on my next build. If I get more funk, or if I'm funkless after a couple builds I'll report back.

Its probably the silica. like others said, torch it.

Hold it over a bic and turn it to burn off any residue. it won't burn so no need to be stingy with the flame but be careful not to grab it too soon because it'll burn your sausage links.

Lol you said sausage links

Thanks for the tip :)

My 2nd rm2 came today and ive pretty much got it to where I know vapey sweet spot is. (1.33 ohms) and with that said I think you guys were correct in suspecting the silica. I torched it for the first time and also did a dry burn after installing new coil.

And guess what no funk! I would like to build a couple more coils before feeling confident in my claims. But what I can say is after torching this is the best my ejuice has tasted since moving to reomizers. so much better in fact, I'm not even thinking of my old bridgeless empires anymore ;)

Thanks guys and happy holidays
