The cartridge would probably need to replaced first. They sell ultra fine cartridge filler at My Vapor Storeso if you don't chew on the end of the cartridge just pack it like its packed, loose but if if inverted and liquid slips out add a little more. Just loose, not to tight. The site has a lot of entry level doohickeys in my opinion that are worth looking at. The attomizer should last well but depends on your juice and if your vaping it "nicely" I guess is the best way to put it. Some juices aren't bothered by the off taste that starts in a old attomizer others require a fresher one. You'll just know when the vape is not pleasurable anymore. Some Atties last a long time others don't. Sorry about vagueness, but best to have back ups on supply anyway. I say milk it but these are disposables too. The site will enlighten you I believe. Sometimes shopping is a big big learning experience. It has a little of everything...but no nanos! Hope this helps

The bad tastes are generated at the atomiser - the bit that heats the liquid to vapourise it. Running the atomiser dry will usually make it start to taste bad - you can do this in two ways: Letting the tank run dry and not changing out until the taste is already bad, or chain vaping more than the wick or delivery system can supply liquid to the atomiser.

In my experience the bad taste may go away if you refill the device and leave it for a few hours but if you want a fresh tasting vape you can try boiling the atomiser in water for a few minutes. I've not had any problems doing this and it does freshen up an atomiser nicely.

Some liquids are more problematic than others. Darker heavier ones tend to gunk up the coil more and burn. Examples I've had problems with are coffe, caramel cappuccino, chocolate etc. Lighter fluids seem to have less problems - light tobacco flavours, fruits etc.

While you should do atomiser maintenance like boiling and other cleaning only as a last resort, provided you are carefull with dis-assembly and re-assembly you should have no problems. I've even boiled cartomisers to clean them. Just make sure you leave them a few hours or even a day in a warm place to dry out properly.

So if it tastes bad, and my battery is still good - it can hold a charge, and is well charged. Then I know my atomizer needs to be cleaned or replaced.

What happens when a cartridge gets stale if there is no change in taste? Less vapor?

It'll get fouls slowly by the atty. again depends on juice. You can count how long it takes to smoke one dry-ish. Then you can count how many MLs. Usually 1 or less right? So you can pull out the old filling and redo, make the mistakes it takes to get it right and just play. It's better to top off cartridge filler than let it get to dry. Just pretend it's your pack of matches and open and strike top off. Shblow out and reclose the match book type thing. Best part is not butts to deal constantly

Less vapour normally indicates a lack of power: the contacts need cleaning or adjusting or the battery is going flat but has not yet reached it's cut-off.

By "cartridge" I suspect you mean a cartomiser - it has both the liquid and the atomiser in one unit. These don't normally go stale in time frame that we use them, though if you have a badly burnt atomiser it can contaminate the taste because it leeches into the filler. refilling doesn't always get rid of the bad taste even if you leave it a while in which case you can try boiling it. (nothing else to lose).

You can also get poor vapour if the atomiser is burnt and has a layer of carbon over it. They still work, but seem to need more time to get up to the proper temperature. On an automatic battery this can be a real problem since every drag is cold, vapourless, and tasteless. Boiling cannot remove a carbon layer over a coil, but it can still help with the flavour. I read that 6% hydrogen peroxide can be used to clean a coil but I tried it and had no luck. You see, I've had these problems with cartomisers running heavy liquids myself.

If you actually have a cartomiser with filler or the soft ceramic these can not be disassembled. Just boil the whole thing and make sure it is dry before re-filling. Any silicon rubber parts (eg soft ceramic cartomisers) will not be damaged by boiling. If you have some kind of tank cartomiser or a separate tank/atomiser system then remove the atomiser element and boild it on it's own.

I started out with cartomisers with filler and soft ceramic cartomisers but it looked like an expensive proposition if they need replacing every few days. I changed to a CE4 tank cartomiser (1.6ml) for may main vape and bottom coil clearomisers (1ml) for testing flavours and for stuff I only use occassionally. Using these has got around most of my problems because you can see when they are running low and just fill them up or switch them out. Cartomisers with filler and soft ceramic cartomisers only hold a tiny amount of juice, and you are more inclined to use them until they taste bad at which time it's too late - the damage is done.

I liked the CE4 style clearomiser so much I've ordered two different ones from another supplier to find the best one. There seem to be a whole swag of options out there. Try some as you might find as I did that other options work better and are more satisfying.

Chris.

Chris.

Actually I was referring to a standard 510 cartridge with filler. But I am also considering cartomizers too. They just seem like a lot more work to refill as compared to Tanks or traditional 510 cartridges.

I am now wondering how to know when to replace a tank for a 510T or an eRoll. There's nothing to go bad. Couldn't use one of those things forever. With a clearomizer, I guess your just waiting for your atomizer to go bad.

Anyway, thanks for replying. I am learning a lot.
