Replacing O-ring/washer on an atty

I have had several instances where the O-ring/washer under the center contact of my attys has broken, rendering the atty useless. Could I replace this with an O-ring that I got in the plumbing department at the hardware store?

Yes, the only thing its doing is insulating the positive and negative connections from eachother, if you can find another way to keep them separate, it will perform the exact same function.
