Oh a vaper and a straight shaver. It expensive buying all those hones and then razors huh lol. Don't worry we both must have acquisition disorders lol. I call it a learning disorder, because I'm always trying to learn how to make things if they're straight razors, wire welders or vv mods.
and the brushes, don't forget the brushes! they've been my real achille's heel lately, after getting bored with my home made strops projects LOL

we may be getting off topic though LOL You can find me under the same user name over on shavenook.com if you wanna chat about that stuff :toast:

So I'm just waiting on a few things before I attempt building one of these following the GSA guide. So I am a complete newb at something like this and I've been reading over the guide while looking at my components and I have a few total layman questions:

In the guide there is: "Connect both - wires from LM2577 the - from the battery and the other alligator clip wire lead to the - of the capacitor". Just making sure I understand correctly, there will be 5 wires all connected to each other?

Also in general when connecting wires, should they be soldered together or just twisted together and then covered with shrink tubing?

just thought I'd share this here.....with the discussions about "why use silver when nickel is so cheap?"
Well, I haven't tried either yet, but I ordered silver because I had read a couple things about it being safer than nickel.
All the links I found here pointed to places that were about $20 for 30' or so.

I found a site called MonsterSlayer.com that was quite a bit cheaper, the site looks like it was made on geocities in the early '90s, but I took a chance and my order just arrived, before the Kanthal that I ordered the same day, or the hemp that I ordered a week ago
Their price varies based on current market value of silver, but I just got 100 feet of 30ga .999 Fine Silver for $20.01 plus $6.95 shipping

Thought some people here might be interested at that price :toast:

oh, p.s.-
They have even gauges from 8-30 and you can order any length you like, no preset spool sizes. 100' came nicely wrapped on a 2.5" diameter spool. Overkill for this length, but this way there are no tight coils

ill be interested to hear whether of not you have success with welding silver wire. id be welding my 100 feet of silver, but i just cant get any good welds with it. all other wire, no problem!

Why buy any NR wire? Pull a strand of wire out of the wire you use for mods. It welds very well.
Silver is soft and bending it several times to wrap around the wick weakens it to the point of breaking. At least that's what I experienced.

Breaktru, you could have mentioned that before I got 100' of nickel :D

LOL don't base too much around my failure/success. I haven't even received the parts to make the welder yet, so I'm about as far from experienced as one can get

Ummmm.....I thought I understood the purpose being for making 'legs' for the coil that won't heat up and burn the rubber plug in the base? I don't plan to bend the silver or have it be part of the actual coil in any way.
Using on a CE4+/CE6, the one factory head I pulled apart to examine definitely had different wire welded in for the 'legs'

Plus, I don't have a lot of other wire laying around here, I don't do a lot of the other modding that a lot of you guys do

I thought copper was a bad choice for constant contact with juice and heat. I figured silver was used because it was safer to vape.

The copper strand I am using is not copper in color but silver in color. It is probably tinned or plated. No copper is exposed.

Isn't NiChrome an alloy of nickel and chromium?
Yup.

Cancer risk of arc welders exposed to fumes containing chromium and nickel - US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health
Chromium and Nickel in Welding Fume, Safety and Health
Fact Sheet No. 4
- American Welding Society

I tried searching for similar info on silver and the only thing I found, before giving up after going through a couple dozen links, was this:
The Facts on Silver - Dartmouth Toxic Metals Superfund Research Program
"In very high doses — such as those a factory worker might encounter in an accident — or from prolonged exposure to silver dust or fumes, silver can have some mostly mild effects on health. For example, inhaling silver fumes or dust may irritate mucous membranes or the upper respiratory tract."

Sure, we're probably not getting the levels of fumes to cause any of the serious issues with Nickel, probably.....but, I feel pretty safe with something that only causes mild irritation in exposure to factory levels on a daily basis

that's why I limited my sources to more reputable places than wikipedia LOL

I think you're right, that vaping off any of these is most likely safe enough....but since we're talking about arc welding these wires it seemed relevant to look at vapors produces while melting them. Sure, it's small amounts....but still, I'd rather err on the side of caution if given two options where one might be okay and one is definitely safe.

At least until I see for myself how difficult welding the silver is anyway :D

Just got my order from Digi-key today, just waiting on the circuit board from ebay and a better soldering iron....should all be here in the next few days
