It's from a big boy flash for an old 35mm slr type camera (my grandparents ages ago)....I remembered my son had been playing with it and couldn't get the flash to work. When I took it apart I noticed that there was some corrosion inside around one of the battery connections.

Caps tend to change value and fail to work as they age... Especially when they are stressed, such as in a flash capacitor.

I just chained a few caps together...
An 100, 120, 120, and a 160 uf together...

what do you mean by chained together? I can't tell for sure from the small photo but if it's series together it's like paralleling resistors.
Your capacitance is LESS. Your total capacitance is 2.17uF

In parallel.
Positive, to positive

I am finally able to weld! I joined two wires, for the first time! Without making them vanish!

Good, parallel is the way.

For those that are looking for the so called "Magic" 75v, I want to make something clear..........
75v worked for the capacitance that I used. If you are using more or less capacitance, your "Magic" voltage will be different. Trial and error will determine your "Magic" number.

Here is the step converter I just picked up LM2577 3A DC Step Up Adjustable Breadboard Module Power Supply Converter USA | eBay
Since I already had the rest of the stuff for the other build, and the camera was free.....

I hate to be the bear of bad news @gsa, that is not the same board that I linked to. It only goes to 36v. The Tsaf uses a range of 25v to 40v. The board used is a 4A, 0v to 42v.
Someone here already used the board you linked to and they said it didn't work good.

update:

Wait a minute gsa, wasn't it you that said that the LM2577 was a Dud?

Ok...the step up regulators are cheap.....but I'm back to asking about modding a pc power supply or like something below....my thinking is that they already have some kind of step regulator/etc, case, fan, 120v input????

I don't really know very much about this stuff, if its not obvious...just throwing out ideas

My board was a DOA, I didn't mean to imply the lm2577 wouldn't work. I was the one who pointed you to the link on ebay too ;) Notice how the xuanstore logo is right over the booster chip? Makes me wonder what chip is being used, I am sure you will clarify when you get yours :) I just hate it when sellers do that.

As for the voltage on the LM2577, it should output max 35v and I use 32g nickel for NR and 32g or 34g Kanthal for R so I think it should be fine for what I want to do, others may have different needs.

man, no matter what i do...adding caps, try tons of different voltages, clean wires, short runs....silver wont stick. id love to see a video or at least a pic of someones welded silver wires, i cant get them to stick to each other or to a different kind of wire. anyone? i know people have said they were successful, but id love to see it.

Thanks gsa. I get lost in the many posts on who said what. Yeah, if you don't do the heavier stuff you won't need the 40V.
and thanks for the link to the converter.

I carefully read the spec's before ordering mine. There are some that are 40+ max output but they are not boost. They are step down. The voltage input must be at least 1.5v above output voltage. So for those looking to order a DC-DC converter, read carefully first.

Like others with case loads of cameras have offered, I'm willing to send some out to those who can't locate stock piles :D...just pick up the shipping. I didn't get chance to count, the manager handed me a bag and he dumped the box into the bag. I'm going to tear them down tonight and get a count.

But I think most places will give them to you if you ask for the manager and explain that your not going to run around shocking people....offering to purchase them also indicates that you probably aren't going to use them in a hurtful way. I offered to pay but he wouldn't take any money and seemed more than happy to get rid of them.
