After sending messages to all of my representation in congress, I've received word from my representative, in the House:

November 27, 2013

Dear Mr. (Redacted),

Thank you for contacting me regarding electronic cigarettes. It is good to hear from you.

I am a firm supporter of individual freedom and states' rights. I believe it is a person's legal right to choose whether or not to smoke, so long as they are of age. This is equally true of electronic cigarettes, which are a safer alternative to tobacco products. As a result, I do not support a federal ban on smoking or use of these devices, but rather see this as an issue best suited for state and local governments to address. The age for smoking should be handled at the state level as well. Please be assured I will keep your views in mind as Congress considers legislation regarding electronic cigarettes and other tobacco-related legislation.

Again, thank you for contacting me, and please stay in touch.

Sincerely,

Yep. That's the reply you should get from a republican. I am hoping the recalls over Colorado's gun laws will have them stepping very carefully over this issue in coming months. As much as people rag on the NRA, we could use an organization like that on our side.

You should respond to him and give him as much legitimate data as we have on the subject and then sum it up. At least then he will be informed.

Sent from my Astromech in a galaxy far, far away. The force is with me. so is Mr. chicken.

You know, honestly, the fact that he even responded, with a message that was relevant to my issue, in a positive manner, is a great victory, where the US government is concerned. At least in my eyes.

He's not a member of the nanny-state party, so his response is not unusual. Send out the same letter to members of the other political party and the results will be far more interesting, if you get a response.

As mentioned before, vaping should not be an issue of political skew. It is compelling to both sides of the aisle, and the science is proving to be rock-solid.

I am surprised at the positive regard that politician had for ecigs. However, they have a s--- ton of people that take care of those kinds of letters.

Good looking out though dude.

They do have staffers handle this kind of thing, but they pay attention, especially to written letters - if they get enough people contacting them regarding an issue, they'll put it on their radar. Doesn't mean they'll vote the way you want, though. Sadly, my reps are the kind who will tell you one thing, and then when it comes time to vote, follow the political line and ignore what their constituents want, or some kind of deal cutting happens behind closed doors and they vote (typically) for big money interests. I'm politically an atheist (I don't believe politicians of any kind), so don't think that's a slam on any party in particular.
