Reynolds American reports 5.5% decline in US cigarette industry shipments in 2Q14, 8.3% cigarette shipment decline for RJ Reynolds, .5% volume decline for American Snuff, and that its Vuse e-cigarette is now sold at 21,000 retail stores

Since 2008, e-cig sales have doubled annually, while cigarette consumption has consistently declined.

But those and other facts haven't stopped e-cig opponents from falsely claiming (and haven't stopped the news media from repeating) that e-cigs are gateways to cigarette smoking, are renormalizing smoking, and don't help smokers quit smoking.

And tends to belie the statement of PM in your other post: "While these products have generated a high level of interest among adult smokers, their potential seems to be currently limited because they do not satisfy adult smokers."

Wow, that adds up to a lot of "lost" TMSA payments to Big Govt. Considering that tobacco bonds only have a ~3% decline factored in, while actually experiencing nearly double that rate, I bet many in BG are starting to get really worried of impending default on $96 billion outstanding in these bonds. Don't you love it when the dots connect all by themselves...

More proof that e-cigarettes are de-normalizing smoking.

And another reason that I'm beginning to believe that here is more BG behind the effort to kill them than anything else.

PMI said that 12 cigarettes out of every pack are sold for the government, they stand to lose more than anyone else.

And that statement (and others) by PMI belies PMI's recent purchase of E-lites in the UK (an inferior cigalike).

PMI has been publicly criticizing e-cigs for the past several years (because PMI didn't market e-cigs until it bought E-lites), and PMI has been claiming that its new smokefree alternatives will be more satisfying to smokers than e-cigs. Basically, PMI has been trying to assure potential stock investors that its $2 Billion investment in new smokefree alternatives wasn't a waste of money, and that PMI's new heat-not-burn products will be able to compete against the existing e-cig industry.

They just can't admit to their stockholders that a pharmacist in China beat them to the draw for a miniscule portion of the 2 billion they have spent and now they have to spend more billions trying to convince smokers that almost burning tobacco is a better way to go.
